This book is about a life of prospecting for mineral deposits in some of the wildest and most remote places on earth. This included living in tents for several years and working in extremes of hot, cold, wet and dry.

This is a story, based on the author's diary, of commuting to work by canoe and snowshoe in northern Canada and by helicopter in Alaska; of following wombat trails in the rainforests of Tasmania; of bear encounters in the Yukon; bush plane crashes in British Columbia; prospecting in the Mojave Desert of California and going where no man has gone before in Antarctica.

You will read about his adventures on an Antarctic expedition to the Transantarctic Mountains and the Ross Ice Shelf in 1961-1962. He describes being weather-bound by whiteout conditions in a small two-man tent only a few hundred miles from the South Pole and the dangers of crossing unknown crevasse fields. You will learn about prospecting and mineral exploration and the detailed history of two major discoveries that he made as a consulting geologist. In 1968 he discovered the still-unmined giant copper-molybdenum deposit at Schaft Creek, British Columbia, in a rugged, mountainous area of northern Canada so remote it is accessible only by bush plane.

In 1986 he discovered the world-class Castle Mountain gold deposit in the Mojave Desert of southern California. It was the culmination of a life in exploration and he achieved the goal of every exploration geologist: to discover a major mineral deposit and stay with it all the way to production. The Castle Mountain mine was permitted after much difficulty and produced more than 1,250,000 ounces of gold between 1992 and 2001.

This book records the seldom-heard experiences and views of a mineral exploration geologist, whose knowledge of wild places certainly deserves equal consideration with that of environmentalists. Many of the wild areas where Dr. Linder explored are now withdrawn from mineral exploration and mining. The encroachments of civilization, government land withdrawals and bureaucratic regulations threaten mineral exploration and mining. The wilderness prospector seems destined to go the way of the early explorers and trappers, never to return.

This is an amazingly interesting book. While I think it would be especially informative to people considering a career in geology, its appeal goes far beyond that. It's truly amazing to read Dr. Linder's story of his days at the "office." For those of us who deal with stolen lunches and cubicle drama at work, it's refreshing to read about someone whose life was often in danger in the course of his work in remote areas, and endured physical hardships as just another day at the office. Definitely puts it all in perspective. Fascinating.

I'm not a Geologist but that didn't stop me from taking so much pleasure from this book! I am a traveller and I am in absolute awe of Harold Linder's adventures. I've never read another travel memoir that packs in so much detail but keeps the balance just right between fact and adventure. Whilst I've read I've constantly scribbled notes about new places that I want to visit. I'm not a fan of being cold but I'm now inspired to see Antarctica and the stunning photos that illustrate his adventures have given me the push to 'man-up' and get out there! I can't recommend this book enough, whether you are a geologist, a traveller or someone that loves travelling vicariously through others. It's a really beautiful book, that has pride of place on my coffee table. Without fail everyone who comes round picks it up and has a read and I have to prise it back off them before they leave!

This is a first-rate book, unlike anything I've ever seen. The amazing amount of detail and excellent, numerous color photographs enable you to experience fully the life and work of an exploration geologist, in parts of the world that are truly remote and beautiful. There are helpful and interesting maps throughout. The section on the Antarctic is especially engrossing. The book is very well written and describes the demands, dangers, and rewards of this kind of geological work in an unusually clear and genuine way. The perfect book for an aspiring geologist or explorer, and any armchair traveler.

A very interesting read - The author describes the unique awe and wonder of working in places most of us would never dream about visiting, much less working at for long periods of time. I had the good fortune of serving with Dr. Linder in the Antarctic as a fellow grad student. His ability to relate the conditions we encountered is noteworthy and accurate. Acquiring geological and geophysical information about our planet is not a job for the faint-hearted. His book lets readers sample the high and lows of a remarkable life.
