I would recommend buying a spool of tippet to go with this kit, as you will shorten the tapered leader very quickly if you fish often. Also, buy yourself a fly kit, as the midge flies that come with this kit are very tiny and really only good if you only plan to fish for trout (I live in the deep south, so it's bass and bluegill for me). Speaking of fishing, nothing is more relaxing than casting a fly rod, while you've never been more exilerated until you've caught a big fish on a fly rod. The felling that translates through the rod is unattainable with traditional rod and reels. Once you start fly fishing, you won't want to use a regular old fishing reel again.
I am a Fly Fishing Merit Badge counselor and have found this rod to be perfect with the scouts. The action is just right for learning. Unfortunately, my son took it to college with him this year so I will have to use my faster-action Wild Water rod (model HXF-090-4) this year.
The support and warranty is great - I broke my tip section a day before camping. When I contacted them they called right back and told me how to fix it in time for the trip (they couldn't mail it in time). When I got back they replaced it with no questions asked.
Finally, my son caught a 31" rainbow with this kit last summer in the Rocky Mountains (Spinney Mtn) - this was his first huge fish and this rod/reel allowed him to fight that fish like a champ for more than 15 minutes. Nobody else was catching anything, proving it can accurately present flies to wily old fish!
The problem I had was that the rod snapped midcast at the connection on the end section. I'm not sure if I snagged the line on something, or what. I just expected a bit hardier of a pole.
My one complaint is the flies that come with the set. They are tied well, but the islets of the flies can be very difficult to pass line through if you don't have a tool to clear them, which I didn't the first time out. Now that I have a pair of nippers with a little pin on the end, I haven't had any issues getting line to thread.
Highly recommended if you are looking at getting into fly fishing and aren't sure if you'll like it. It had been 10 years for me and has definitely gotten me back into the sport.
