However, I have some issues with this product. In the first place, it is made out of wood. Now, that, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. Unless, of course, it is bare, unprotected wood, and is hung out in all kinds of weather, which this is. For $16.00, I should have received a wooden product with some sort of protective finish on it, paint or varnish perhaps, or, a product made with pressure treated wood. As it is, I have what looks like a product made out of unprotected pine. I have had this only a couple of months, and already the wood looks like it is falling apart. The screws have started to strip and the wood sides are coming away. The hardware used is adequate, but why an outdoor feeder like this would be made out of unprotected wood, and soft wood at that, is beyond me. How hard would it have been to dip the wooden assembly in some sort of solution to protect the wood?
I like the product as far as what it is. For now, it is working, but it will not last. That is unfortunate, because for what I paid, I should have had gotten a product that would last me for a number of years. Yes, I realize I could paint or varnish it myself, but now we are talking about the added expense of paint or varnish, going to need a brush, too, and, oh yeah, my time. So, to fix this right, it'll be more than what I paid. Not the good deal I was expecting. I remember one of the posters saying that it was assembled nicely, and that was one of the reviews that caused me to buy this product. I will admit that, on the surface, it is put together nicely. It's just that they used crap wood and didn't bother to protect it from the weather, which is totally unacceptable for a product that is going to spend its' life hanging out in the weather, year 'round. I thought two stars was fair; however, considering the obviously short life-span of this feeder, I can't recommend buying it.
Great addition to my backyard feeder station. Seems sturdy and well constructed. The screen tray slides out easily, but I usually just dump the shells on the ground rather than sliding the tray out. The Vinyl-Coated Steel Hanging Cables are soundly attached; not sure how long they will hold up in our Pennsylvania winters. Remains to be seen. However, they should be easy to replace if/when they need be.
Been using this platform feeder for two months. The birds were spilling so much, I needed a way to intercept the seed BEFORE it hit the ground. I hung this under one of my Droll Yankee tube feeders to catch the spilled seed, as my feathered friends sort through them to find the ones they want. LOL Of course, some seed always finds its way to the ground, but that's where the ground feeders eat. And some of them also feed from the platform. There is a LOT less moldy seed spoiling on the ground than there was before.
I feed about 90-95% black oil sunflower, but I add white millet, niger, safflower, and peanut chips for variety. I was concerned that the small white millet or niger would fall through the screen. However, very little, if any, does. I assume some must, but its not enough that I notice.
All in all, very pleased with this little gem. It pays for itself in saved seed.
