In the 1980's I began building WW2 military aircraft model's. Eventually I started looking for info on the pilots.

Barrett Tillman's writing style on the F4F-3 and 4 brings out the technical shortcomings and advantages of this historic fighter aircraft. Also, reveals in detail how tough it was for a young, average age 18 to 26 yr old Marine and Navy pilot, This book honors their deeds and sacrifices. Excellent.

A great review of this sometimes forgotten aircraft

In the early days of WWII, the Wildcat was the best fighter the US Navy had. It was no match for the Mitsubishi Zero, but in the hands of good pilots, it more than held its own and gave as good as it got. It's often forgotten in the glare of more glamorous aircraft like the F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, P-38 Lightning, or P-51 Mustang, but those weren't around to hold the line in the early days of the Pacific War. In the crucial battles of Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal, the little Wildcat held the line and helped turned the tide for the Americans. In the Solomons, it was the Navy fighter that bled the Japanese naval air forces dry. Tillman gives the underrated and tough little fighter its due. A great companion to his other books on the Hellcat, Corsair, and Dauntless. Your WWII US naval air library isn't complete without it. :-)
