Thought I had pressed play for a Coldplay album...

The first time I played the album I had to double check and make sure I hadn't accidentally played a Coldplay album. Now I appreciate Coldplay and the statement is nothing at all against Coldplay, but this album has virtually nothing of what "made" Mumford & Sons sound like Mumford & Sons. Gone are the banjo and driving individual instruments, in are generic synthesizers and electric guitar riffs. The vocal stylings are still somewhat there, but it sounds now like the whole album has been produced to be Top 40 Hits material more than anything else. Not bad per say, but certainly not the direction I expected. Then again, they certainly didn't ask me and they already got my money since I pre-ordered the album based off the fact that I have pretty much all their previous work and play the fire out of it all.

Anyhow, there is certainly the chance that this album will grow on me as it certainly isn't "bad" just completely different and not what I evidently was subconsciously wanting their next album to be.

A New Direction or A Corporate Plan?

Mumford and Sons has now fallen into a trap that has killed many bands though it may not be warranted in this case. Any radical departure in a signature style or voice can, has and will alienate a large portion of the core fan base; the best example being Jewel though this can also be shown by the Rolling Stones releasing a disco album.
This rated three stars simply because there is quality. However, having loved "Babel" and "Sigh No More" so much I will be gun shy to purchase their next album. Both those albums were strong enough in their entirety to stop me in my tracks and force me to listen. "Wilder Mind" is decent background music to ignore, it's generic radio fodder and nothing more.
Many of the fans of this band were attracted to them for their unique sound and hopefully that is not dead. More often than not this sort of radical departure is inspired by an executive or producer in a quest for a larger audience and more cash. If the masses are not supportive of this it may spell the end of Mumford & Sons as a band to watch for.
So, as a summary, unless you are one of the "die hard" (this band can do no wrong) then wait till it hits the bargain bin. It's worth having but no one should spend this much on something which will spend most of it's time on a CD rack.

My Summer 2015 Favorite

I think it's clear that a lot of the negative criticism is born out of comparison to Mumford & Sons' previous albums, which is understandable but I personally feel it's a tad unnecessary. On its own, "Wilder Mind" is a joy to listen to and I feel like it's a natural try-out of a different tone. Out of the 12 tracks, I love all of them except "Monster" and "Cold Arms," so I couldn't be happier from buying the album. For Summer 2015, this album will help define the beautiful mornings and evenings I had the privilege to enjoy, and I'm ever thankful for that. I say you give the entire album a chance on Spotify or YouTube and then decide for yourself; judge it based on how it can stand on its own and be enjoyable. I promise you'll love the motion, energy, and most importantly, passion...it's very much there.

Hmmmm where do I begin? I am a Mumford and Sons junkie. I literally left their last cd Babel in my car CD player for a year! I listened to it constantly. I did the same with sigh no more....so when this came out I was waiting to be blown away! I wasn't. I mean I was....but not blown away in a good way...more like "woah I'm blown away by how mediocre this is and how bland the lyrics are." Maybe I'm being too critical but after those first two masterpieces this was pretty disappointing. I'm giving it two stars only because their hit Believe saved it.

A Well Executed Departure

Mumford & Sons had their groundbreaking moments with their first and second albums, this is a different album. If you love the first two as I do, that's great, listen to them again and again, but don't criticize the third album for not being the same. I think this album is a great evolution for Mumford. It really speaks to the talent of the group, showing their ability to put out a well rounded, very fluid album in a style that is different than what they made their mark with. That takes guts and is what is necessary to keep moving and diversifying their sound. In the end they're great musicians. This album may move closer to traditional rock style, but it's still has the Mumford spin on it which I love to hear.

At first, I didn't care much for this CD ...

At first, I didn't care much for this CD. After the third listen, I felt a bit pissed off for even buying it because the songs felt hollow when compared to their earlier tunes. Thankfully, I didn't rush to write a review. Since I had no new music (other than Sufjan Stevens), I let this CD spin on continual auto-play. For a long time, I ignored the songs and considered them to be more or less a meaningless collection of background music, but after about 30 plays, something clicked. I appreciated the whole structure of the record, and I came to appreciate the subtle shifts and simple approach. If you're patient and open to a less-than-zero type of experience, you'll appreciate the reward this collection offers.

Some folks are upset that this album is not of the same flavor as their previous two albums. But all musicians need to change and grow to become better at their craft and expand their own range. This album also differs in a way few would know if they had not researched. All four members of Mumford & Sons contributed to this album. Life events around the members also influenced this album. At the end of the day, I really enjoy this album and like the direction it went. I hope the banjo is not gone forever, but this will do as well. This is an expanded taste of what this group can do.
