One of a kind because both the hero and heroine aren't your run of the mill main characters where they are both beautiful and handsome and embodies the standard moral of society at their time. But mostly it's the heroine that captured my attention on this book. First, the book blurb is WRONG. She is not a wanton (as I understand this word to mean promiscuous) woman but she was a rape victim who remained a sex slave for a long time in her past life. In the book's present time, the heroine wasn't a wanton woman.
Second and the reason I said she's one of a kind was that she isn't physically attractive as she hid her woman-ness because of what I mentioned above. The H even admitted to thinking her less than human the first time they meet and with reason since she never bother to please anyone. Her main purpose in her harsh world was to survive and keep her son alive and out of trouble.
In the end, the hero and heroine's 'attraction' towards each other lies in their inner strength. The hero sees in the heroine her love and devotion towards her son and her word of honor. Her tenacity and hard earned skills to survive in the wild and in all situation. Her jaded, yet quite accurate, view of the harsh side of humanity. And also the hidden woman inside the wild woman that was so scared to come out yet eagerly awaiting for a reason to resurface.
Attraction based on physical appearance like most romance book these days are easy - for writers to write and easy to forget. This book will stay in my mind for a while. I believe these two main characters bond will stand the test of time because it's more than skin deep.
If you find yourself getting bored from all the cookie cutter romance characters, give this book a try. It's not for everyone for sure but for those souls brave enough to go through the harsh wild west, this will be a rewarding read. It's a book that shows both the dark side and the redeeming side of human heart.
This is a gritty depiction of the wild southwest and the apache terrorized area south of the border. The history and customs are very interesting and the climatic action is riveting. As with all fiction, on occasion the author seems to suspend reality for the greater good.
In the end, this is a book I recommend for anyone who likes to read about life in the southwest during the late 1800's.
