Guadenzia finally got her chance and won time and again, and today all the contending horses are Anglo-Arabs.
Henry tells the story excellently but young people, for whom it is written, will be dismayed by the early part of the book when we find that Italians eat horses - the fatter, the better - with a shrug and 'people have to eat'.
Also published as: Palio, the wildest horse race in the world, and: Guadenzia, pride of the Palio.
