"Environmental advocates Scardina and Flocken profile the grassroots organizations, tenacious scientists, and willful philanthropists that shape today’s conservation policy and practice. Each portrait centers on a threatened or endangered species and describes the life and work of the person who has dedicated his career to protecting the species from extinction. Organized into sections corresponding to the four elements—Earth, Water, Air, and Fire—with introductory essays by celebrities like Ted Danson, the subjects are grouped according to their habitat, with “Fire” focusing on the broader threats to the world’s ecosystems. The pithy summaries of the activists’ struggles are accompanied by informative tidbits about the biology, behavior, natural history, and cultural context of the target species, along with delightful photographs of both human and beast. From the grassland-dwelling maned wolf of Central South America to the iceberg-hopping emperor penguin of Antarctica, the book shows how negative human interference imperils the welfare of all living things, and suggests that by taking an active role in conservation, education, and community building, we can help prevent the tragic loss of the world’s biological diversity."

Mrs. Scardina and Mr. Flocken have created a wonderful tome telling a variety of important stories about nature in need and the dedicated people fighting to provide her with help. The layout of the book is simple in that it is broken down into habitat areas with individual chapters for specific animals in peril. This allows you to read individual chapters at your leisure anytime and in any order. Although I almost always read 3-4 more chapters than the one or two that I planned on...the book just pulls you in. The information provided in each chapter, combines animal information with biographical stories of the researchers plus the specific conservation concern. But the amazingly beautiful pictures that accompany each chapter are what keep you engrossed and turning pages. They allow you an up-close and personal experience with animals living in some of the wildest environments. You will find all your favorite animals included but also animals that might be new to you like the maned wolf, the fossa, or the pangolin.
The book ends with a chapter on what you can do help out. From simple daily actions to more dedicated conservation efforts. The chapters are so inspiring, that at the end of the book, to have an avenue to take action just makes the book all the more valuable! Plus since 100% of the proceeds go to conservation efforts just that first click to purchase the book has you already taking action. Wildlife Heroes is a great read and a magnificent gift for that nature lover that you know.
The book simultaneously tells three stories: those of the species at risk, those of the activist working to save endangered species, and a much larger story of how the most dominant species on the planet is threatening the continued existence of our fellow inhabitants.
