“The Swamp Massacre.” That’s what the media dubbed it. A family on a boat tour through the Florida Everglades. Abducted by the infamous Roy family. Forced to endure hell.
Five years later, an aspiring filmmaker and her friends are keen on making a documentary about the incident. To venture into the isolated wilds of the Everglades in hopes of capturing footage that will stun the world silent.
They’re going to get their wish. Unfortunately.
In this terrifying follow-up to the critically acclaimed Wildlife, Wildlife: Reckoning plunges us deeper into the darkest corners of the swamp…and reminds us that man is the deadliest animal of all.

Travis Roy is out to settle a score. He has been screwed over by the system and his father and they are going to pay. He is seeking out his heretofore unknown relatives that live in the same swamp, the rest of the Roy clan of wierdos. Meanwhile, Stacy and her hipster friends and their boyfriends go roaring through life unfocused, looking for that next drinking game or next roll in the sack. To make a bundle of greenbacks, they are heading to the swamp to do a Netflix documentary about the Roy family massacre of a few years ago. What could go wrong?
I had very little connection with Stacy and her bunch of friends. They all are one-dimensional, transparent with no personality. Except Stacy, the ringleader. She is the brain that leads everyone into hell. However, the Roys, without exception, are psychopaths, each more disgusting than the ones before. Not real, not believable. There is never any doubt about who the villains are in ‘Wildlife Reckoning’.
The problem with sequels is the ingrained desire to overdo the original, in this case more gore, more cruelty, more excessiveness. It’s too much. The clunky dialogue and farfetched storyline are no longer creepy. The story becomes just gross. I didn’t care for any of the stereotypes, not the ignorant blood-lusting hillbillies or the naïve money-hungry city-slickers. Everyone that dies endures horrible deaths but by then it was all so predictable. So nonsensible. Typical slasher horror story. I don’t think I would watch the documentary either.
This weekend, I needed to escape the real world for a while so I decided to reread a couple of my favorite books by Jeff Menapace. I flew through the first WILDLIFE and immediately picked up RECKONING. People always wonder how authors come up with this stuff but more so, it scares me how much we love these messed up stories! If I want to escape real life for a bit, I definitely prefer stories like these that keep me glued to my comfy spot!
In WILDLIFE, we took a trip into the Florida Everglades and met the Roys and their extreme belief of an “eye-for-an-eye” when their family is done wrong…and sometimes, even when they aren’t. The fight for survival in WILDLIFE left someone seeking vengeance and a RECKONING. So when a group intent on making a documentary about the Roys and the horrific events a few years earlier, they are a little too eager to venture into the swamp seeking a good story. Well, they got the story…
Again, I don’t want to give any spoilers but this story brings back a few characters from WILDLIFE and introduces some new ones that will leave a lasting impression on you and thinking about them long after finishing the book!
SPOILER:
1. Leah seemed kinda like the badass of the group so why was she the first to run out of the water? I would have thought she would be a tougher chick that would have endured a more complex kill scene.
2. Why did Travis put his father through the most brutal torture? It made sense that it would be an intimate kill but it also seemed that the guards who raped him got off easy... except maybe for one.
3. Travis was a liar and a coward as a child. Experience does change you but I wonder if we should not have seen more of his cowardice in the face of strong opposition? I do love how Jeff made him a very complex character.
My favourite two characters in this novel were definitely Uncle Harlan and Stacey.

No hesitation giving this five stars, that very last paragraph was what truly got the emotions flowing. Thankyou for the excellent work Mr Menapace, looking forward to more!

I read through this in super fast time, and that's due to the great writing and storyline.
If you've read the first, you won't be disappointed. If you haven't read the first, what are you waiting for!
