If you are a high school junior or senior in the Advanced Placement (AP) and will be sitting for the AP English Literature & Composition exam, you'll want to maximize your chance for success. You may know your stuff, or think you do, but the real test of your knowledge is the exam itself. Let's face it, not everyone is a good test taker and the AP exams can cut the wheat from the chaff. The two-part exam is comprised of two sections, multiple choice and free response. The first part is a one hour exam that counts as 45% and the second is two hours (three essays) and counts as 55% of your score. Perhaps you are confident of your ability to ace the essays, but what about that multiple choice? On the other hand, perhaps you're more confident of acing that multiple choice section.

In this book you'll find be able to review the types of questions, both essay and multiple choice, check out some examples, and check out some tips that might help you out as you prepare for the exam. The pages of this text are peppered with tips and examples to work with. In the back of the book is a very thorough index you can work with, something I always appreciate when I want to either browse or look up something specific. Each chapter is prefaced by a list of Key Concepts that will be covered. There is a brief overview of the main theme and then an introduction of what to expect on the exam. You'll find your answers as to what you should do and, more importantly what you shouldn't do. For example there is a list of certain types of writing that are "certain to doom your essay."

Obviously you'll be interested in those two practice tests, but the bulk of this work is review, something that you really should pay attention to.

I use two of the author's other books to help English students that need a clear explanation and practice of grammar and punctuation. They are clear and well-written. This AP English Literature book is also superior in terms of the average 'raft' of study guides in terms of its examples, explanations, and tactics in preparing for the AP test. However, its the author's prose and sloppy writing that I have some trouble with. For example, take this: "Literary criticism is essentially the printed version of the lectures or arguments you hear in English class." Well, maybe for some lazy teachers, but the statement seems pretty silly to me. Then there's the clarity of the writing, "You've learned nearly all of the vocabulary words you use on a daily basis almost effortlessly...." Then as for advice, "When you first read a poem, you probably shouldn't take notes because you'll likely need to use every available brain cell simply to decode the meaning." Whoa!! That advice is more along the lines of a poorly written Amazon review. Still, anything to encourage the study of literature helps spread the experience of literature, in my book, so long as it's not abysmal. This one is OK, and with some other study aids, the student might be able to get credit for freshman English, which, in terms of my own experience teaching a community colleges and major universities, is a far worse fate for a young, enthusiastic lover of literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resource June 12, 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
First of all, I must tell you that I have been an AP English teacher for a number of years, and I normally do not use books of this type in my class nor do I recommend them to my students. A good AP teacher should be able to structure his or her class in such a way that supplemental materials such as these are not necessary, so I have never advocated any of them to my students or used one in my class. I only use materials provided by the College Board in my class. But I have been asked many times for my opinion on this or that guide book, and when I saw this one available through Amazon Vine I decided to take a look at it to see what it was like. While I still don't believe books like this are necessary, I believe this one could be helpful. The information about the form and function of the test as well as the sample questions, answers, and essays provided seemed pretty much spot-on to me, and as such I think that, as a supplementary material, this book certainly couldn't hurt anyone. Of all the ones I've looked at, this one was the best I'd seen in its organization of material and its presentation. It had a conversational tone that was easy to read and hit several main points and suggestions without confusing the reader or bogging him or her down in superfluous details. If you are in the market for this kind of book, you could probably do worse than to pick up the Wiley.

5.0 out of 5 stars two complete exams, lots of review questions April 25, 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
If you are planning to take the AP English Lit and Comp exam, you could do worse than to purchase this guide. It contains two complete practice exams, and a lots of review questions that will help you become familiar with the kinds of things you will be expected to know and do for the exam. When I took the AP English exam many years ago, a guide like this one would have been a boon, but I did alright on the test anyway.

In addition to this book, I recommend preparing for the composition section by doing the review questions in Rudolf Flesch's excellent book, A New Guide to Better Writing (or any of his other books on writing):

The Classic Guide to Better Writing: Step-by-Step Techniques and Exercises to Write Simply, Clearly and Correctly

The Art of Readable Writing: With the Flesch Readability Formula
