It isn't really for the "next step" of "force 7" sudoku puzzle people. This is more of a twist on the tale.
This is a beginner book for kenken, and helps establish the concepts and methods for a broad audience. But experienced puzzlers will quickly outgrow it.
Most puzzles are high quality, fun, and solved in five to ten minutes. But as another reviewer pointed out, two puzzles in this book are unsolvable, until you "solve" the riddle by looking at the answers in the back and realize that there was an operational error misprint.
A good introductory alternative puzzle book, but not of the highest quality and not super challenging. Would have been a better value offered as a paperback.
A glance was enough to see that no puzzle in this book would take more than 5 minutes to solve.
The Times' online Kenken puzzles are quite nice, and I believe that Kenken is a nice new puzzle, which has some advantages as compared to Sudoku. But if you want a new challenge, I would rather go in the direction of Extreme Sudoku, or some other Japanese puzzles.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to try out any of the other Kenken books, and after this disappointment I think I will stick to online puzzles until someone decides to give me a Kenken book for X-mas. I would think that some of those books would offer significantly harder puzzles than this one.
Despite my unfavorable opinion on this book, I don't think the book as such is bad, and it might go very well in some audiences - it just did not live up to my expectations!
Also, I found an error in two of the grids. They don't match the solution in the back and make the puzzles unsolvable. These are a crucial errors especially considering how disappointing the puzzles were originally. They clearly weren't proofread very thoroughly.
All in all, I would definitely skip this book. This is not up to Will Shortz' usual standards.
