About the Author

Kristin Lajeunesse is founder of and blogger for the award-winning website Will Travel for Vegan Food. In September 2011, the New York native began traveling throughout the US in an effort to eat at and write about every single all-vegan establishment she can find. Eighteen of those early consecutive travel months were spent living out of a renovated sports van affectionately named Gerty. Almost immediately after beginning her journey, Kristin discovered a deep passion for nomadic and unconventional living, and has since chosen to maintain a mobile lifestyle, indefinitely. As of July 2014, Kristin met her goal of visiting and eating in each of the 50 states. A self-employed business and lifestyle strategist, Kristin now works with small business owners and entrepreneurs looking to turn their passions into profitable careers. Kristin is also a founding member of the Vegan Weddings HQ website and the Unabridged Addiction podcast. She has a Master of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communication from Emerson College. I was following Kristen's journey with Will Travel for Vegan Food for a while when I noticed that she was coming to my area here in Northeast PA, and when she walked in to my vegan restaurant, eden-a vegan cafe in Scranton, I immediately recognized her and welcomed her to our place! It was so cool to meet her and I knew at first glance that she was someone special. She ate, we chatted, we took some pics and added a "Will Travel for Vegan Food" Bumper Sticker to the many stickers on our restroom wall. We became friends and stayed in touch, networking through the ever-growing vegan community, and I was thrilled to attend her end of trip party in NYC that was also a fundraiser for the Woodstock Animal Sanctuary. Reading this book made me feel like I was experiencing the trip through Kristen's eyes and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey!!! I highly recommend it to anyone, as this book is a great read no matter who you are or what your interests are, it truly is for everyone! I know we will have a copy or three on our bookshelf at the restaurant! Kristen is the real deal - smart, compassionate, caring, emotional, passionate, loving and simply real, and it surely shines through in her writing of this book. I am very honored to know her and to have been a stop on her wonderful voyage. <3

As someone who has been following Kristin since near the beginning of her road trip and who has always appreciated Kristin's personable and obviously compassionate personality, I really wanted to love this book and am sad to say that I don't feel that way. While it was definitely enjoyable at times, something felt lacking to me. Pros: Kristin's personable writing style, Kristin's openness, Kristin's authenticity, maps that showed where she traveled to for each section of the book, and the inspiring theme of finding oneself and building connections in the world. Cons: a lot of flashbacks throughout the book that caused it to not feel linear much of the time and sometimes caused confusion, the use of "big" words that seemed misused as if just there to try to impress people by the mere use of such words (e.g. Kristin wrote "epically quaffed" about someone's hair when I'm pretty sure she meant coiffed since quaffed means to drink something heartily and also wrote that snow came down "in droves" when droves refers to large numbers of people or animals), and sometimes it felt like there was TMI regarding sex scenes (and I say this as someone who is DEFINITELY not a prude but just feels that sometimes sex is used more to be risque than to actually add to a story, which in this case is how it felt). Also, perhaps this is my fault for misunderstanding that the book was not really meant to be like the blog in being focused on the vegan food, but I felt that the veganism and food did not have enough of a starring role in the book. I now understand after reading the book that the publishing offer was made for Kristin to write about the personal side of the adventure, but I still would have liked to have read more about the visits to restaurants or at least about what the vegan community (or lack thereof) was like in various parts of the country.

Love love love this book! Smart, funny, moving. It had me laughing, crying, and drooling over the amazing food descriptions. I really admire Kristin's entrepreneurial spirit, her bravery, and her commitment! This book is a great read for up-and-coming entrepreneurs, foodies (both vegan and non), travel-junkies, and van dwellers past, present or future.

Not as good as I was hoping. It started interestingly enough, but way TMI about her sex life. The pace really lagged through the middle section of the book, which had me toss it aside for a few days out of boredom, and the ending was so sad that all the positive feelings I built up in the previous couple of chapters were gone. I hate ending books on a downer. I loved her descriptions of the food she ate, though. She should write restaurant reviews, as food descriptions are the book's one strong point, and leave the books to other people. I know road trips solo are meant for introspection to some degree, but you can only write about your thoughts for so long before it crosses the line of self-indulgent navel gazing. I wanted to love this book, but instead it was simply average, with the highlights of her vegan parents (how lucky is she to have vegan family?!) and the food being the things that saved the book from the DNF category.

Before the hate mail starts rolling into my inbox, please know that this 1-star review is not coming from an angry omnivore who just spends his time patrolling the Internet and writing hateful reviews. I am vegan, I am an animal rights activist, I am all of the above. That being said, I (to an extent) wholeheartedly support the influx of any form of pro-vegan media, this book included.

In actuality, my 1-star review stems from Lajeunesse's inability to take what was no doubt a one of a kind experience, and make the reader feel what she felt. Instead, she strings together a meek and forgettable assortment of weak adjectives, mundane conversational dialogue and poorly developed plot lines that leave the reader constantly wanting, but never receiving, more.

This book shoots for inspirational, makes an attempt at motivational but lands directly in the middle of ordinary. Is it a waste of time? Not at all. Well maybe that time she describes the appearance of her iPhone. Yeah, that part was a waste of time.
