Allow me to clarify that my rating has nothing whatsoever to do with Hodgson's writings - each of which I would readily rate 3.5 stars and above. I find the ebb and flow of his prose incredibly entrancing, especially in his magnum opus, The Night Land; and that, I confess, is the sole reason why I have thus far refrained myself from hurling this particular volume into the fire in vexation. With a price tag of $285 (or $395, if bought directly from Centipede Press), I could not have imagined the book to be of such low merit. It would be impossible to list all of its problems, but by far the two most excruciating offences are those regarding-

1) The illustrations: again, the artworks themselves are of great quality. However, these works, when reproduced here, are exceedingly smudgy, with dull colour schemes and highly perceptible pixelation. I believe that if I had downloaded the drawings from the internet, then printed them off my HP Deskjet 2050 (i.e. one of the lowest-end colour-printers around), these prints would have looked quite as "fine" as the atrocious prints in this book. The only exception to this rule is the awesome illustration by Ian Miller, fantastically reproduced on the first two translucent, nylon-like pages of the volume.

2) Editing and proof-reading: the people at Centipede Press did not do a good job (or even a decent job) in this department.

Bibliography

It has been a long time since I have read Hodgson, and with my new reading of THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND I am impress'd anew with the beauty of his writing and the cosmic sweep of his imagination. I haven't read the Carnacki stories in a long long time, when I read them in the Arkham House collection; and I remember finding the stories wonderfully entertaining yet found the character of Carnacki a bit silly. Although it has been many years since my first reading of "Out of the Storm" and "The Voice in the Night," I still recall the eerie sensation these tales instill'd within me, and I look forward to reading them again. The book does not include all of those works by Hodgson that can be called "weird fiction," due to space limitations; but what is here presented is the very finest. S. T.'s fine Introduction is illustrated with rare photographs. A very handsome, volume, solid and beautifully design'd.

As this lovely volume just arrived, I have only read 3 stories and although these unique and appetizing, I will still try and review at least the volume if not the whole work In another review Wilum pugmire Esq. has listed all the stories in this volume so forgive my laziness, as not listing a table of contents is a moot point with me regarding book reviews . This volume is beautifully covered in black cloth , tightly bound, with an embossed Hodgson signature on the front board , with quality paper, a red ribbon book mark and a semi gloss attractive dust jacket featuring a profile photo of Hodgson. Included is a short but interesting forward dealing mostly with the editing, or collecting of the included works, also included are photographs of Hodgson. If you haven't been exposed to Hodgson's work there is no better starting place. A lovely collection to delight lovers of good " weird" fiction and bibliophiles as well.Better act now ,as these were i believe only printed in a small number( 500), and when they are gone you will kick yourself or someone else for not buying one. This also came with one of the best and neatest packing jobs you could ask for it was backed on heavy cardboard, wrapped in heavy plastic ( sealed) the volume itself was wrapped in plastic as well, then into a sturdy cardboard box.
