NAMWALI SERPELL is a Zambian writer who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley. She received a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award for women writers in 2011 and was selected for the Africa 39, a 2014 Hay Festival project to identify the best African writers under 40. She won the 2015 Caine Prize for African Writing. THE OLD DRIFT is her first novel.

Plot: Will recalls how a doppelganger or a creation of his mind kept getting him in trouble, placing him first into juvie and then jail. This is a retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's William Wilson.

Likes: Natural voice and flow of the main character. The thin line between reality and supernatural.

Dislikes: While the story had an interesting vieb, it just didn't have any strong points. I just didn't connect with it well.

Audience: Edgar Allan Poe fans?

Rating: 3/5 stars from me. This was fine, but didn't resonate with me.

As a chosen voice of the Gospel of Christ Jesus I read everything in the light of the Gospel. Will Williams is all of us in one form or fashion. Thankfully, all of us don't end as he does. The primary message of the Gospel is that we must free ourselves from ourselves.

"Me" is your greatest enemy. When Moses asked God who shall I say sent me? God answered "I Am". He did not say.... .... Me, God.

If she didn’t read some Stephen King as a kid I’d be shocked, because her narrative is clean and clear and psychologically intense like his. But, the stuff about the school? Classic Edgar A. Poe...it made me smile, because I actually taught in a school that had rats in the walls.

I look forward to more from this talented writer!

Don't waste your time with this collection. All of the stories but 1 were written terribly, and the 1 that was decent seemed like it stopped mid-sentence!
