Format: Audio CD
Today is the Day's second release, Willpower, is both a continuation of the harsh and visceral approach taken on Supernova and also a more accessible and varied offering. This isn't to say the album lacks punch. It's still heavy, raw and in your face (the frequent use of proto Math-core time signatures only help to further the effects of auditory suffocation. That's literally the only way I can think to explain it). What makes this album more accessible than it's predecessor are the changes in mood and style packed throughout the album's relatively short length (Just under 30 minutes). My First Knife for example goes from pretty standard TITD territory; buzzsaw guitars, busy drumwork, and the intimidating screams and yowls of Steve Austin. About a minute and 15 seconds in, these segue into a surprisingly melodic cascade of riffs and Austin's unexpectedly emotive clean vocals, leading right into another instrumental freakout and back again. Plenty of other surprises lie ahead: an almost Shoegaze-y ballad (?!) in Simple Touch, sludgey riffs galore on Promised Land, and an instrumental rendition of Amazing Grace as a very fitting outro. The fantastic use of samples (one of Austin's many motifs), is also prevalent here (The intro to Golden Calf in particular). An enthralling listen from start to finish.

Favorite tracks: Nothing to Lose, Promised Land, Simple Touch, My First Knife, and Willpower.
