After only a few uses at temperatures no higher than 220 degrees and hand washing only, the markings and temperatures began to rub off. I continued to use it to read the temperature of milk while making yogurt, but now it is virtually useless at the lower temperatures as all the markings are disappearing. I am now on the hunt for a new thermometer. While I could use it, it seemed to take accurate readings fairly quickly.

I've had this candy thermometer for 3 years now and it works well for a large amount of liquid and a large pot. Does not work well for a short pot with a shallow amount of liquid. I made a half batch of Peanut Brittle today and it burned because the thermometer could not reach the liquid when it was cooking and the thermometer kept coming off the pot while I was stiring it. Very bummed!

This works well as far as measuring the temperature of the candy that I make. My main concern is that the bracket that holds it to the pan has a problem. The side of the pan can't be very thick, or the bracket will come off the thermometer. When making candy, I have to use a heavy pan and it presents a problem. Don't get me wrong, it's still better that the cheapy that I had before, I do like that it will go in the dishwasher. Just be forwarned that it could be better.

It's definitely worth purchasing a Wilton candy thermometer versus the ones found in grocery stores which have the paper inside and the round cap on top. They always leak water into them when washed and if you have to soak them because of hard candy - they never work again.

My last Wilton thermometer was dropped and broken a couple years ago, but it had lasted almost 20 years. This is well worth the investment.

I recently decided to resurrect the old family tradition of making Rosettes for the holidays. This is a type of Scandinavian cookie that is deep fried and requires the temperature of the oil to be kept fairly consistent. Being that I do not have a deep fryer I needed a way to determine what the temperature was and help me keep it there. Hence my purchase of this thermometer.

This thermometer has a very solid metal body surrounding the actual thermometer element which protects it from the back, bottom and top. However the face of the thermometer is protected only by being recessed as compared to the ridges on the sides, bottom, and top. This means as with all glass thermometers that you need to be careful. The body itself is solid enough that I feel pretty safe about putting it into a tub with my other Rosette making items, as long as this is on top and I don't jostle the tub too much. I may wind up packing this away by wrapping it in a towel.

The back of the thermometer has a metal clip that can be slid up and down the body of the thermometer to position it on the edge of whatever container you need it in. The clip is pretty snug to the body and depending on your needs you may need to bend it out a bit. The pot I was using this in the first time had a very pronounced curve at the bottom edge which pushed the thermometer out from the edge and made the hold of the clip to the body somewhat tenuous until I adjusted it.

Temperatures are presented in both Fahrenheit and Celsius and are easily readable. The thermometer element is red and is easily viewable from several angles, though if you try and read from a wrong angle you will not be able to see the temperature at all.

I make candy year round and have gone through three of these thermometers in 2011 alone. First of all, you must calibrate your thermometer every time you use it. Place it in boiling water and is should read 212 at boiling. Second, the cute little plastic handle overheats and will burn your skin. I have actually had it melt right off the thermometer. And third, it is fragile and breaks easily. Nice stocking stuffer but anyone who really wants to make good candy will buy a better made product.

I've owned a few candy thermometer and to me, this is the easiest to use, and pretty darn accurate with the readings. Some reviewers say the ink comes off, so the numbers become unreadable. I have yet to come to that problem, so i wouldn't know. Mine is still in good condition after a few uses. I like it, that if i break the current one i own, i'd not hesitate ordering the same one again. And it is so affordable compared to the fancy looking ones costing 2-3 times more.

I've made candy with these several times already; caramel, marshmallow, etc. I have never had a problem with the numbers rubbing/melting/slipping off. The actual thermometer doesn't touch the bottom. I don't need a TON of liquid in my pot for it to make contact (I use 2-3 qt pots). It is very easy to clean (hot water and soft soapy sponge) and I'm very happy with my purchase.
