I'll admit that I was skeptical. How was the middle going to cook before he thin edges burned? But, the wife said she needed book shaped cakes, and maybe the folks on Ace of Cakes can sculpt a cake with a knife, I certainly can't. Call it a cheat. This thing works, and yellow cake, at least, comes out clean and ready for icing.
The pan cleans up easy, too, which is a boon.
I've had it a year but haven't used it yet because it's not often that I make such a large cake.
But it looks sturdy enough; usual Wilton quality.
No matter, I have a way for you to make this cake a LOT better without making yourself nuts with the design suggestions:
1.) Buy red Wilton food coloring - make some buttercream frosting (easy, recipe is on the confectioner's sugar box) and make the ideal lady bug red with a couple drops at a time, mix, and add more drops of coloring as needed.Frost the red part of the cake as desired (it's pretty straight forward how to do this - don't do the face red.
2.) Buy a tube of the black Wilton squeeze frosting at the store - it's a pain in the butt to make a good true black, and black looks words better than the chocolate frosting they suggest. Only do the face in black icing.
3.) To make this lady bug actually look the part, buy a sleeve of oreos (or oreo-like cookies) and chocolate twizzlers.
4.) Twist the oreo cookies into two separate cookie halves.
5.) Assemble the cake by placing the oreo cookies [white creme side down into the cake] on the red frosted part of the cake - it will look like awesome spots, much better than their frosting design.
