On the surface, this pan/insert set appears quite appealing. After starting to make the cupcakes, several "problems" arose that needed to be dealt with. First and foremost, the instructions are extremely vague, i.e., the photos on the instructions show a chocolate cake with yellow centers. Chocolate cake cannot be tinted ANY color, which means you will need TWO batches of batter to make chocolate/anything.

Second problem arose when using a thicker than usual cake mix recipe. There was a considerable amount of batter wasted when removing the insert. Rinsing and spraying with Wilton's Cake Release helped somewhat, but there was still a lot of batter that went down the drain.

Thirdly, the instructions don't tell you that somewhere in the middle of all this pouring, you will have to reverse the order of the colors, or you will run out of batter -- the outer ring uses twice the amount of batter than the inner ring.

While none of the above affected the end result, it was somewhat frustrating the first time. I have depended on Wilton for several years to make my baking experiences easier, but this one doesn't fall into that category.

Overall Review: If you don't mind having to make a double batch of cupcakes when planning on using a chocolate cake batter this kit works quite well.

We faced several of the same issues as the first reviewer. It was difficult to get the rings out once they were filled with batter. There was lots of wasted batter. Also, it was nearly impossible to use this with cupcake liners. My 10 year old daughter, who is a fabulous baker, was very frustrated and finally gave up. Our finished product didn't look anything like the pictures on the box, that's for sure!

I was very disappointed with this. It is awkward and messy to use. I used paper cupcake liners for easy clean up(ha, ha!) and followed the instructions as written. The instructions state to put this two tone cupcake insert into the cupcake pan and fill the inside cavity with one color/flavor batter than fill the outer cavity of the insert with another one. This insert allows you to fill 3 cupcakes at a time. I found filling these to be very difficult and time consuming! Both cavities of this insert are narrow and not easy to fill. After many frustrating attempts using a spoon, I poured my batter into squeeze bottles which was much easier and quicker to use.

After filling the first three, I removed the insert to put into the next 3 cupcake compartments of my pan and the batter dripped off of the insert all over my pan. This was REALLY messy and a waste of batter!! I had a difficult time wiping off the pan before baking especially since some of the batter seeped between the paper liners and the pan. I do not know how this can be avoided. Since the insert compartments are so narrow, it is impossible to scrape the batter off the insert before totally removing it from the pan,

I did get a distinct middle core to my cupcakes(I only used 2 different colors), but I found it was too time consuming and messy to justify using this again.

I found it a lot easier to make my own cupcake batter dividers to achieve a 2 tone/3 tone/4 tone or unique design in the middle of my cupcakes. I cut a 2 1/2" circle, (the diameter of my cupcake) out of thin plastic(a container lid will work) Cut the circle in halve and make a slit in the middle of both pieces, 3/4 of the way from the straight side of one and 3/4 of the way from the rounded side of the other.

If I could rate this zero stars I would. I bake and sell cupcakes from my home so I think I'm pretty good at baking...and this is the worst baking product I have ever used. I followed the directions exactly and they did not look at all like the box "claims" they will. After they were done baking I cut three in half and noticed that all the color I put in went straight to the bottom and sides (how is that even possible?). I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money on this. DO NOT BUY unless you are some sort of magician.
