I bought this set to decorate my granddaughter’s birthday cake. She had requested a mermaid theme. It has so many tips to choose from and I had a great time decorating. The only issue I have with this product is that it come with some large tips along with the regular size ones but not bag adapters for the large tips. I had to purchase them separately which I wasn’t aware of until I went to use them.

It has been some years since I have done any cake decorating but with a preschooler at home I want to do her birthday cakes and maybe teach her how to decorate as well.

Overall this is a really nice set to get started with. There is a nice variety of the basic tips, "disposable" bags (which are lighter than the vinyl bags but heavy enough to be washed and reused at least a few times), a nice offset spatula, a quick coupler and a box to hold it in, which is important for keeping all your supplies together and not scattered about your drawers.

The coupler is not necessary - you can always just drop your tip into the bag before adding icing. But it is really nice if you plan to use a few different tips, you can use the coupler and very easily change the tip without having to use another bag and more icing. If you are planning to use the same tip with multiple colors, though, you'll probably need a few more couplers (or at least coupler bases) as the coupler base goes into the bag with the icing. There is also a cap to cover the bag if you are going to have the tip off for some time.

The coupler does not work with the larger tips. It only fits the smaller tips. I believe you can find larger couplers to purchase here or elsewhere to use with those.

Along with the coupler is a bag cutter. The bags don't have a hole in the end and you need to cut 1" off the ends. I find that a quick snip with the scissors is much faster and easier than using the cutter, but if you have trouble cutting off too much or not enough, I suppose the cutter could be useful for that.

Overall this is a very nice set for most home decorators. My biggest complaint is the instruction booklet. Since it's been so long I was excited to see that a booklet was included. But when I opened the booklet my excitement turned into frustration. If you are over 35, the booklet will be completely useless to you. It is written in 6 point type. I found it next to impossible to read. It's a simple 1-color black ink on inexpensive paper saddle-stitch booklet. It's not a particularly expensive piece to produce. Wilton, add 4 more pages and increase the size of the text in the booklet to at least 11 point. I saw several reviews stating that there were no instructions on using the coupler. There are instructions, they are just so microscopic that many people can't read them at all.

Wilton is a good company and I have used many of their products. Although this set is good quality, the instruction booklet has print too small to read. I spent time trying to figure out how to use the system and never figured out how to insert/use the large tips provided in the set. I even looked at some You.Tube videos but they only showed how to use the system with the small tips. The plastic coupler only accommodates the small tips.

I figured out how to use everything but it would have been nice to have some sort of directions in the package. I had no idea that the one piece was in there to cut the tip off. I looked at the piece trying to figure out what it was for until I played around with it and figured it out. Now that I know how to use everything I love it but it would have been nice to know what all the pieces were for earlier on. I am also really disappointed that a set like this does not have the usual pieces that you put on to the end of the bags to stop batter/icing from oozing all over your hand. I bought a kit with just bags that included those and my mind is blown that a kit like this doesn't already have them. It's so messy without them. So if you get this also purchase a set of bags that have the ties for the open end of the bag if you don't want thicker batter getting all over you.
