This 4 pack of Wilton Gel Primary Icing colors, is perfect for my basic baking and decorating needs. I wanted a set of gel coloring that I could use when I get around to making macarons, and also use for other stuff. The colors are bold, intense, and concentrated. It is so much better than the typical food coloring I have purchased in store.

A little goes a long way and I can actually achieve a bold bright color. I even played around with mixing colors to make new ones, or different variations of the same color. It really worked out at Christmas time and I was making tree shaped frosted sugar cookies. I just wanted green frosting, but decided to make a few different shades of green. So straight kelly green, a yellow based green, and a blue based green. The green themed palette looked great once all plated together.

While it says gel, it isn't as thick as the little pots of color, but it sure is thicker than the typical liquid. I don't taste anything with these, likely because I need a lot less to establish a strong color. I have had no issue with getting a red, a green, a blue, or a yellow. Nothing looks off to me?

At $4, it was a worthwhile item for me to try.

Vibrant colors, but not traditional colors

Colors are vibrant, worked great for my buttercream. BUT, they are not your traditional red, yellow, green, blue. The yellow is so rich not if the time it turned things orange or light yellow. The green is not a Kelly green, but rather a forest green. Blue is more... Dusty-navy blue than royal blue or cobalt blue. I haven't used red yet.
