The strainer part looks as fine as the Calphalon strainer. So it should do as well with straining scum from corned beef or small particles from broth. The metal handle extends under the strainer. So there should be more support to prevent the handle from breaking off. The only possible disadvantage that I can see is that the strainer may be a bit more difficult to clean because food particles may stick to the handle extensions that go under the strainer. It also doesn't have the solid, rubberized handle that the Calphalon strainer has, but that doesn't detract from the functionality.
After I have used this strainer for a while, I will update my review if I have any problems with it. For now, it looks like it will serve my purposes.
I do like the way it is made, with the handle wires dipping down to become support for the mesh. I like that it can be hung by either the far end of the handle or the part up near the strainer. It seems reasonably well constructed. Time will tell about corrosion, etc., of course. It is made in China by Winco.
Certainly this is still a good tool for certain tasks in the kitchen, such as skimming, but if you want to wash millet, quinoa or other fine material, try this: HIC Brands that Cook 5 1/2" Nylon Mesh Strainer (but not the 7" one) - which does not state that it is fine mesh but I just bought the 5 1/2" one and not a grain of millet passed through its mesh.
This is a well made, decently priced kitchen tool. With free Supersaver Shipping on orders over $25, I'm glad I bought it!
