Some subject matter not that easy to read, however, with some sections just a gigantic racial slur. Also, some pages of rants reminded me of Ayn Rand's John Galt speech, of all things. At several points these became so outrageous, I could only think these sections of the book were meant to be satire (?). I could be wrong, and the author was just stating what some of us already think but summed it all up in just a few pages.
I would hate for what he wrote to be an accurate description of the future, and some of what is going on today, but it could be just that. Get ready for a cold hard look at what could be in store for all of us... without society's current window dressing.
The main character is a seemingly nasty SOB; not really though, because he does take the time to help various people out, but most of the time it doesn't do any good (I was struck with the satire aspect again).
ANYWAY, loved the book, in spite of the grimness. If you want a real SHTF or PA or TEOTWAWKI story, this is a must read. However, it is so realistic, it is not for the squeamish.
Update: Dec. 2015
I decided to re-read "As Wind In Dry Grass" because there is such a HUGE shortage of decent, well-written TEOTWAWKI, PA and SHTF books these days, and I wanted to, for once, be able to read a book from cover to cover, where I didn't give up in disgust, where I know that the author had brains, was articulate and could tell a good yarn, AND the reviews weren't just leading me on saying "Oh this book is so wonderful, plot was [insert compliment], really held together, really felt for the main characters," (etc., etc.). Sorry, I do believe I have read the majority of them, and have found that most are superficial, "make-nice" or not well-written.
I read one review here, btw, where the reviewer says something like "the author should keep his politics out of the story." Hahaha -- that's a real good one, because, as any fan of TEOTWAWKI, PA and SHTF will tell you, the whole thing basically STARTS with politics. I mean really - how do you think we would end up like the books in this genre? Some random action somewhere? Hahaha... nope.
Anyway, as I re-read "As Wind In Dry Grass" (and I was unable to completely re-read 100% of it and had to skim over many parts because it was just too horrible to read again... meaning I remembered it all ~18 months after my first read, and couldn't take the grimness, scary and sad parts a second time), it occurred to me that this really isn't a work of fiction. It is a documentary that just hasn't happened yet.
So if any of you want a really hard look at what could happen (and may happen...!), read this book. It is a no-frills, no holds barred story; the main character has the required mindset that someone would need to survive this calamity. Granted, he's a nasty, unapologetic, hostile, uncaring (sort of) person, and has had a lot of bad stuff happen to him. So he's not really a happy-camper. Everything is black and white in his world, no grey.
Another reviewer commented on it's "racial profiling" or "racial rant" but I disagree with that comment.
In my opinion the author is pretty much spot on with what I feel would transpire if and or when American society crashes. I'll go out on a limb against today's sheepish brainwashing and in the chance that I would be called "Racist" and say that I have no doubt that there would be "Ethnic Grouping's" once there are no law keepers to keep people in check.
One must only look at other countries that have suffered this same fate, failed government's etc, religious sects going after each other, ethnic groups singling different groups out for extermination, etc. Placing this story line in the USA was probably very easy if knowing the history of these other failed countries, just copy what already happened in those countries.
Yes, it is a very dark story. But this story takes place in a very dark setting. I did see some light at times in this story, though it might not have stayed light in most of those circumstances.
We all need a good REVENGE story and this one gives you plenty of that.
The truth hurts the sheepish individuals, and they would be the first to fall or trust stupidly to their doom if this really happened to our way of life.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any moderate to hardcore apocalyptic fan. If you are the squeamish type like the previous "critical reviewer" then I would not purchase this book, just like I would not myself read a romance novel.
5 stars all the way, and I hope this Author continues in this, or a similar direction with another book.
