The tent really does go up in an instant. Take it out of the bag, spread the corners, raise the tent, and you're done. (Unless you want to add the fly, which takes a couple of extra minutes.) The frame material is solid, as are the joints- this is sturdier material than seen on the poles on the average consumer-market tent. The quick setup is a winner-- I often camp with a friend who uses a Eureka Timberline, and I am set up and ready to go while she is still in the middle of struggling with her poles.
A lot of thought went into this tent's design. One example is how the exterior frame keeps the fly completely off the surface of the tent. I could find no spots where the fly contacts the tent. This is important when it's raining. You'll find lots of tents where the the fly overnight will stretch to contact the tent, and you find yourself continually adjusting the guy lines to keep it off- or you get leaks. None of that is necessary on the Wind Ridge, given the exterior frame, although it does have four guy lines for the fly, for staking down in high winds. I only use two of them, even in rain or wind.
I have had this in a 45-50 mph storm with just the two main fly guy lines in place and it was solid as a rock. That's about the limit for any general-use dome tent.
I have had this tent in a couple of torrential downpours lasting hours, and there was not the hint of a leak. Absolutely tight. I was dry and snug as a bug in a rug inside.
The tent is superbly ventilated with large side and front windows- this is a great tent for leaving the fly off on warm nights when no rain is expected, and you just want relief from the bugs.Read more ›
Living in Florida, I couldn't appreciate the many of the unique features this tent has to offer until I took a backpacking trip into the Rockies. While the boot holders and outside mat seemed nice, I didn't really understand there real utility at first. Once I went to the rockies, I totally understood! The boot holders keep your shoes out of the rain and snow while you sleep. Other reviewers have even mentioned that porcupines will eat the leather off your boots at night! I've never had this happen, but given the steep cost of a nice pair of leather hiking shoes, this features is worth its weight in gold. The stakeable outside mat is great for getting your boots off without tracking snow inside the tent.Read more ›
This tent was large enough to very comfortably accommodate me, my wife, two sleeping bags, two backpacks, our camp stove and lantern, and several other odds and ends without leaving us feeling swamped. We probably could have kept our 50 quart cooler in it with us too, if we'd had to. The overhead mesh makes a perfect support for a light source (just don't put anything too heavy there, as it could pull directly on the support node and collapse the tent), and the shoe compartments helped keep a lot of sand out of our bed. We frequently found ourselves sitting in the tent during our vacation, talking about how much we love it.
I realize that this tent isn't meant to be used in the winter or on the Andes, and probably isn't ideal for setting up in the middle of a full-fledged monsoon. In light of that I don't really see some of its characteristics like the permanently open side windows as flaws, like another reviewer did. We never felt smothered in our Wind Ridge despite the humidity coming in off of the tide thirty feet away, and we even saw gnats landing on the window mesh, unable to fit through and get to us. Our experience with Eldorado has been purely positive, and I strongly encourage anyone reading this page to buy a Wind Ridge for themselves.
