Product Description
Since it first appeared in 1908, Kenneth Grahame's enchanting story The Wind in the Willows has been a childhood classic. Now, in this splendidly designed musical adaptation, characters beloved for generations spring to life again, this time with six delightful songs and the voices of Charles Nelson Reilly, Roddy McDowall, Jose Ferrer, Eddie Bracken and Judy Collins performing the lovely title tune. Was there ever a creature as flamboyant as Mr. Toad (Reilly) of Toad Hill? Dressed in flashy outfits no sensible animal would wear, he's rich - but so foolish and boastful that his friends Ratty (McDowall), Badger (Ferrer) and Moley (Bracken) are frantic, and they vow to make him repent for his follies. Misadventures involving a steamboat, a gypsy caravan wagon and a Rolls Royce don't seem to wise him up... until he lands in jail and is forced to learn lessons of humility, friendship and common sense.

My grandma was of the same mind as AA Milne with regard to the book the wind in the willows ( that it is a character mirror). So, starting when I was 8 yrs old, she read it to me about once a year. I am 37 and I still read it once a yr. ( I could recite large bits by now). So, I feel very qualified to judge which movies most closely follow the book. In my opinion this one is about 95% accurate in it’s presentation of events. However, the music and whimsical nature of this film, more than make up for the slight changes to the story. This version is of such high caliber that I honestly thought it was the work of Walt Disney.
If you want a much more solemn version that is nearly 100% spot on with the book, the version that was released on video in 1996, is your best bet ( it comes in a double disc set with a sequel called “the willows in winter”.
As much as I love this movie, I will end with a note of caution to students: if you have a book report, you should read the book ( or audiobook if you have accomidations for a disability). The book is thought to be at least a double allegory and no movie will ever have enough time to convey all of the subtle nuances of both allegories or even one of them. Movie versions restrict themselves to the surface story, some versions cover it quite well others are not that great at it. This one is a master piece, but it doesn’t attempt to show the hidden messages. It will be very obvious to any teacher if you watch instead of read. So, go read and then come back and watch this wonderful movie!
They just don't make animated films like this anymore. It has so much of the Edwardian spirit of the novel and the dignity... no wise-cracking sidekicks or modern slang.
It is almost criminal that this has never been released on DVD. A new generation deserves to experience it!
It is definitely my favourite version of this movie and although it’s a bit harder to find than other versions, it was worth the search. Can’t wait to watch it again and sing along to the famous and popular songs like Wind in the Willows, The Weasels song (which I absolutely loved growing up), We’ll convert him and many others. Very glad to have been able to purchase the dvd version now that my vhs version doesn’t work.

I love it When Ratty commands Toad to come down from the tree that Toad was thrown into after the motor car crashed into the cart, I just thought it was funny! I also love what Badger says about the piper...I just like the sound of Jose Ferrer's voice and I am like that, loving the sound of an actor/actress' voice. R.I.P., Eddie Bracken (Mole), Jose Ferrer (Badger), Paul Frees (the Wayfarer), Roddy McDowall (Ratty) and Charles Nelson Reilly (Toad).
One last thing I would like to comment is on the studio's take on the chapter "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn," they really definitely captured the magic of it the best. And the Portly-as-Badger's-nephew bit works surprisingly well, and keeps the characters & storytelling somewhat stream lined. I thought little Portly's so cute, he squeaks almost like a kitten. And overall, I love this film, and a must-see for a Rankin/Bass fan.
