After slicing my finger I figured I wasn't going to let ShedRain off the hook. I paid $11 to ship it back to them for a replacement. My advice. Go to an USPS office to ship it back. Anywhere else(i.e. shipping stores) are likely going to run you over the cost of the umbrella.
F this thing.
Exact same issue as another reviewer here; had the umbrella for about 4 months and 2 of the internal supports broke, making the umbrella effectively useless... I only used the umbrella maybe half a dozen times during that time span... my friend's $5 umbrella from home depot has lasted longer and shown better durability. Maybe if they change the price of this model to $5 then I might consider buying again, but otherwise sorry this is pretty pathetic quality for a $20+ shedrain-branded umbrella.
Update: After having contacted ShedRain about a possible replacement (this was back when I had only had the umbrella for 4 months, well within their LIFETIME warranty time frame) I have to downgrade my review to a 1-star for a truly lousy experience, I was told that to get a WARRANTY REPLACEMENT for a DEFECTIVE umbrella, I had to pay them a return shipping fee which iirc was about $15, and they weren't going to pay for my defective one to be shipped back to them, either! Ultimately, a product which costs $23 with no shipping fee, ends up costing MORE to REPLACE than it does to BUY NEW!
These umbrellas used to actually be durable, about 8-10 years ago Shedrain made the toughest umbrella I had ever bought; it lasted a good 3 YEARS and SEVERAL DROPS and hurricane-wind-like days (50+mph) with NO problems.
Now, however, they are doing something HORRIBLY wrong in the construction process, and effectively refusing to provide any sort of customer service to make up for it, it's obvious they KNOW that they're churning out garbage because otherwise they would honor their WARRANTY and replace DEFECTS for FREE... if they were to do that with the quality they are putting out now though, they would surely go bankrupt.
The point in the umbrella where all of the supports connect at the very top is the worst quality I have ever seen, the last two umbrellas I bought from them had supports ALREADY BROKEN at that point which had to be replaced (ironically, THEN they would replace them for free, as long as it was broken DAY ONE), and for the ones that didn't, the slightest drop or bump resulted in them breaking off from there, or from the flimsy weak-plastic assembly completely breaking. And what is this about a "fiberglass frame"? This thing is the same likewise weak and furthermore rust-prone metal frame that I'd expect from a dollar store umbrella; it got rained on ONCE, I forgot to leave it open to dry, and I ended up with PERMANENT RUST STAINS on the umbrella, from ONE TIME that it got WET!
The one improvement I would make is minor, but significant: it has a little leather wrist strap on the handle that looks to be made of untreated leather. Unfortunately, the strap tends to break or wear through just from the friction of rubbing against the hole it's looped into on the handle. I'd replace it with a sturdier strap, maybe with a carabiner. Minor complaint, but since you sometimes end up carrying an umbrella closed as much as open, it's important to me. If I could give this 4.5 stars I would.
The very first time I opened the umbrella the wind caught it and two or three spokes bent. The umbrella didn't invert fully but the wind load was sufficient to bend the spokes rendering the umbrella useless.
Amazon had a new replacement waiting for me by the time I returned to the US, but I was disappointed that
I will continue to use the umbrella and since it has a Lifetime Warranty, if it fails I will return it to ShedRain.
I suspect the design of the umbrella is sound, but the quality of material and manufacture is not what was originally as designed and that much quality has been lost in having the manufacture undertaken in China. Such a shame to see another US product being manufactured in China.
The umbrella is nice and broad and provides good coverage, similar to a golf umbrella but without the bulkiness. It is difficult to take a golf umbrella on an airline and this is a packable alternative although quite heavy. Comes with a good quality cover. Beware the design / material strength when considering the purchase.
