Review
A primer on the social network LinkedIn and an introduction to Windmill Networking. LinkedIn is a popular social networking site used mainly to establish professional connections and explore career opportunities and advancement. With 50 million users, it has far fewer members than other services like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter--but, as Schaffer notes, "LinkedIn is by far the biggest social networking site that caters to the professional demographic." After returning from years working abroad in Asia, Schaffer ... developed the concept of "Windmill Networking," which involves building up networks of trusted connections, helping others out and reaping the rewards of these connections and favors. The book is a catalog of the basic and advanced functionalities of the LinkedIn network and an explication of--and recruitment tool for--the Windmill Networking technique. Schaffer's exhaustive guidebook covers everything from self-branding and establishing connections to joining groups and updating one's status. --Kirkus Discoveries

LinkedIn is the Facebook for professional people. It's the place to find like-minded people in your business. It's the place to get advice. It's the place to network. It's the place to find a new position. To do all of that, you need to know the ins and outs of the tool--and there are many facets to learn. Neal Schaffer's "Understanding, Leveraging, & Maximizing LinkedIn" is the book you need to teach you those facets. Schaffer has spent a lot of time thinking about how to best use each LinkedIn feature to get done what you want done. I have found the book immensely useful in helping me locate a new employer when I was laid off, in evangalizing the ideas I'm now tasked with disseminating, and in keeping up with my rapidly growing network of people in my business. I keep this book close at hand and go back to it again and again for ideas. Highly recommended.

Like LinkedIn, I charged into this book the obvious way: from page one, proceeding forward. I did not find either the webwsite, or the book, useful when approached this way.
Schaffer has the knowledge and the practical experience to be thorough about LinkedIn, but approaching LinkedIn without a goal is a sure way to waste time and miss the importance of the site. Goal-directed usage, however, does much to improve both. When I needed a reference on groups, or suggestions on using LinkedIn for surveys, Schaffer provided a quick and pertinent guide.
Pros: deep, hands-on knowledge on LinkedIn
Cons: some features of LinkedIn have become passe since the book was published, but Schaffer covers that on his regularly updated blog.

I've used this book and frequently recommend it as the LinkedIn must-use Bible. I've done alot of work advsing job hunting clients and business owners on how LinkedIn can be very helpful to them -- but only if you know how to use it. And there lies the problem, since most people find social media overwhelmingly hard to "figure out." This author does a terrific job writing in clear English explaining how to get the most out of using LinkedIn --with practical guidelines and steps you can follow. Although these websites change frequently, this book offers a lot of value and remains current. I highly recommend it...Robin Ryan, author of 60 Seconds & You're Hired

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I tend to be fairly savvy when it comes to social media, so some books I read don't help me that much (I tend to already know a lot of what they say). This book was an exception - while I already knew a fair amount of its subject matter, there were some gems I had not encountered or thought about before. The sections on inviting 2nd and 3rd degree connections & advanced invitation management were especially helpful. After reading the book, I am more excited than ever about using LinkedIn!
One thing did annoy me a bit - sometimes the author doesn't have definitive information to share. Instead he speculates about why a certain functionality isn't working right for him (Service Providers, for example). I think it would have been more helpful if he had told LinkedIn he was writing a book on their service and would like a definitive answer. I learned after initially writing this review that the author avoided seeking out a definitive answer from LinkedIn on the advice of his attorney. I've increased my rating to five stars (one additional star) because of this (I can hardly blame the author for following his attorney's advice).
That's a small nit, however. Overall, I was very satisfied with the book!

Having made my way through this entire book in search of an answer to the question, "Why would I want to use LinkedIn?", I am really none the wiser. The author seems to think that if you amass a large enough number of connections then something good will happen, but the author never really spells out what that good thing will be. Had the book cost $5 it might have been a worthwhile purchase, since his advice on setting up profiles is clear enough, but from that point on the book was more or less continual frustration as there was a lot of discussion but no clear point. As a final note, it especially bothered me that the author didn't even appear to sign up for LinkedIn's premium services in order to critique them. I respect the fact that the author wrote a book, but I also have a responsibility to warn other potential readers that, as priced, this book is a very poor value.

If you are serious about networking, you must read this book. LinkedIn is one of the most overlooked tools in the social media world yet it is also one of its most powerful business applications. Neal Schaffer understands LinkedIn like nobody else that I am aware of. Furthermore, he practices what he preaches and consistently demonstrates the willingness, and eagerness, to engage with others. This book is the without question the most complete (I had previously bought two other books) authority on this topic and truly takes you step by step in using LinkedIn to put Windmill Networking to work.

Excellent guide to LinkedIn, suitable for both newcomers and experienced users.

"Understanding, Leveraging & Maximizing LinkedIn" is an excellent book for those interested in making the most of LinkedIn. The author (Neal Shaffer) may take networking way beyond what most people want to do, but as long as you identify which bits of his advice to use and which bits to skip, you will find this book incredibly useful.
The first thing that Neal Shaffer recommends is to be clear about your objective when using LinkedIn. Once you are clear about that, you can create a LinkedIn "brand" for yourself, in line with your objective.
I suspect that most people first seriously use LinkedIn when they are either looking for a new job or preparing for the day when they might need to find a new job. Neal Shaffer explains, for these people, how best to set up your profile and build your network to (a) be found by potential employers, and (b) to sell yourself to those potential employers.
LinkedIn is also an excellent tool for anybody in the recruitment business, or for anybody just looking to fill a position in their own company. Again, this book describes how best to do this too, although I do wonder whether many employers will eventually start going direct to LinkedIn rather than calling a recruitment company.
Beyond recruitment, LinkedIn is also a useful source of reliable information. It has a professional user-base, so if you have work-related questions the Groups section of LinkedIn is a good place to do so. Again, the book covers how to do this.
There are many other uses for LinkedIn too, which this book also covers very well.
Along the way, this book gives details on most parts of the current LinkedIn functionality, including details such as how best to set the privacy options. This is something that many people get very wrong. If you think you might be one of them, I suggest reading this book.
Neal Shaffer also describes limitations imposed by LinkedIn. These won't affect most people, but it's good that he makes people aware of them just in case.
Suitable for both newcomers to LinkedIn, and to people with reasonable experience of LinkedIn, I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book so I could start to get the most out of LinkedIn, and too be honest I was hardly using LinkedIn before reading this book and didn't even like the network. I'm now making great use of LinkedIn and getting great business opportunities because of it.

Good book but I'm not a fan of LinkedIn or Social Media at all
Reviewed in Canada on August 26, 2013Verified Purchase
This is not a bad resource particularly if you're already using LinkedIn successfully. I personally have a hatred for social media and have since cancelled my LinkedIn account (So I'm not sure why I bought this?). I'm not in a career or connected to enough people to be able to use this in any practical way. I had dreams once of being an accountant and getting designations etc... but couldn't find even a basic entry-level job to get my 'feet wet' and use something like this to my advantage... NEVER study accounting!! Not unless you have a ridiculous high GPA or have family that can get you in... otherwise you're wasting your valuable dollars. I think that's true of university degrees in general today with the exception of people like engineers and medical professionals. I can see LinkedIn being very useful in a sales career or contractors who have networks of suppliers and customers etc...
