Well, I bought SBS 2011 on release day last year. (2011) Boy, probably the greatest purchase ever. For $700 you get Exchange 2010, SharePoint 2010, and Server 2008R2. Why did I choose this product over Server 2008R2? The number one reason is the ease of use. I noticed the other reviewer said he had major problems with it. You have to have some idea of what you're doing and if you follow the wizards exactly, you should have no problems. If you need something simple to configure and have no need for SharePoint or Exchange, get SBS 2011 Essentials. Some "hidden" charges you'll want to keep in mind for full use is the price of a domain name and an SSL Certificate. You can get a domain name for as little as 2 bucks a year (.info). I personally went with a .org domain name. ($14/year on GoDaddy) The SSL Certificate is also about $50 a year. This should be a no brainer for small businesses. It gives the appearance of being a large corporation and is pretty secure. Buying Exchange and SharePoint will cost you a good sum for the full versions. The CALS are also only 50-60 per user which is about the price of Server 2008R2 CAL except you get access to SharePoint and Exchange too.

You get all of the features of Server 2008R2 like Group Policy and all that. That's all it is. Server 2008R2 with some easy to use wizards. The other reviewer is right about needing a router. It wants you to have a hardware firewall so they made it part of the setup. You can however go in and manually change the settings after the initial setup. Just like how you can team NICs after the initial setup.

Basically, if you have limited IT knowledge, go with SBS Essentials or have a pro set it up for you.

A great improvement over Windows SBS 2008. 2011 gives you additional features in the Web portal remote console in addition to speed. Very stable, we use for several of our clients. If you do migrate from Windows 2003, make sure it does not have corruptions in the system otherwise be prepared to do a clean install and migrate the exchange mailboxes and data files only.

Update- any questions please ask me like Jack did below in comments.

Some people call it vaporware or vainshware or restrictedware or whatever but for my clients who don't need full blown versions of everything this has to offer they are absolutely thrilled. Adding CALs is the only annoyance so I won't rate the CALs very high. Other than that the administrative side of things with SBS2011 is very easy and so much of the little work is done for you and the business it cuts support cost/time down considerably. Just an overall fantastic product for the right customer. At 50 users it's really time to move on to the full products as things can get cluttered... you still get full access to the admin consoles within this like Exchange and Sharepoint so I guess you could go even more with it. I don't like that it's all on one server so that's something to consider... one server goes down and the network goes down.

Buyers should be aware that this is the OEM version of SBS 2011, not the retail version pictured. That means it must be sold with hardware, pre-installed, and cannot be transferred to different hardware once installed.

It's a true shame that Microsoft abandoned SBS line of products, I tell people to get it while they can because there really is NO better option for a small business in my opinion.

Even though the end of the line is in site, you can get at LEAST 5 years out of this product, possibly as much as 7 years.

It's still worth it.

The real losers here are the customers because MS dumped this product. I'd have alot to say to someone in MS if they were important enough to make a difference, but oh well..

Get this, and don't look back! Don't forget to get CALS for it also!

This is probably Microsoft's best deal (Still) for a server all-in-one package for small businesses. Unfortunately, the end of life is on the horizon, but not for a while. You get a lot for your money. Windows server 2011 essentials doesn't provide this much freedom as it integrates more cloud service from MS that you have to pay for as opposed to this product which relies on local host services.

I do wish there was less dependance on the SBS startup control panel, since it wants you to do everything through that wizard and if you do it manually, some of the features do not work and you have to manually add things to get the to jive correctly. Other than that, it is a great OS for small offices and is great value. With Google Apps becoming more and more popular, I hope that gets MS to start lowering their prices a little with some good ol' competition.

In any case, as a OS, this is a fairly stable version, and I have had very few problems with the product overall. But then again, I am sure MS will do something to start making it more like their previous products...

I don't like Microsoft... not at all. However with Win7 and SBS2011 they've finally made good on their oft-failed promises of delivering a quality OS.

Don't believe anything the "retired OS engineer" said (whatever that is). This product he reviewed doesn't have SQL server and Sharepoint services can be disabled. Sharepoint wasn't consuming all his memory- Exchange was. Exchange does this by design. He was apparently running it on junk hardware.
