I ordered the product as a birthday gift for my wife. It arrived the day before her birthday, so I assembled it and gave it to her a day early.
She lay in bed (where should would normally use it) and I put it at the side of the bed in position. It seemed OK at that point (though I'll add that it doesn't quite stick out far enough over the bed - it would have been usable, but it really needs to be 2 or 3 inches longer).
She needed to pull it a little closer to her, so she naturally held the large surface to bring it closer.
Immediately, the surface pulled right off of its stand. She didn't pull hard or anything, just the typical way one would pull it closer.
In assembly, there are screws in the metal stand that screw into anchors. These anchors are GLUED into the wood. What happened is the anchors pulled out - the glue did not adequately hold them in place.
The next day (her birthday) we were out and stopped at a Walmart. We noticed in the furniture section a stand that had almost every feature that this one did (except that the smaller of the two surfaces doesn't tilt). It is Main Stays, which is Walmart's own brand. And it cost only 2 dollars more that HALF the price of this one.
We purchased that one, and in assembling it I noticed several improvements in the engineering. It has a more stable base, it is easier to make adjustments to height and tilt because of springs, and the larger surface juts out further.
But most importantly, the surfaces are connected with wood screws rather than the screw/glued-in-anchor setup of this one. Wood screws are much strong for this purpose, and it feels stable.
We're very happy with the new one we have. But, as I've said already, we'll definitely do business with RandomBy again.
The only thing I wish for is a wider surface area for the main desk. I'm using this stand beside a leather recliner, and the arms of the chair are about 8 inches wide. If I have the desk in front of the chair, so that the work area is centered, it's just a little bit too far away for my arms to reach. If I have the table to the side of the chair, so the platform comes over the arm, it's not in the best position for working. It would have been perfect if the main desk was another 8 inches wider so I could center my laptop over my lap. As it is, I have to work at a bit of an angle, even with my computer hanging over the edge by 3-4 inches. I realize a larger desk area would add more weight, so there's a bit of engineering that would need to be done to balance the table and keep it this sturdy. But maybe this manufacturer would be up for the challenge in another model.
If you're using this alongside a couch or bed, it's probably just fine. The chair depth and arm width will make a difference.
Note: the cherry wood is VERY dark--almost black. I would have liked a light wood option. But the functionality of this stand is much more important to me than the aesthetics.
