The 3S Wine Aerator is perfect for lovers of good wine. The reviewer asked for and received a free sample for purposes of making an honest appraisal of the product. The product works well and is a solid value for the money.
“Some wines when they are first opened offer very little aroma or flavor. It is said that these wines are “tight” or “closed.” Exposure of the wine to oxygen may help such wines become more expressive.."
"Other wines may be very tannic or have a single, overbearing flavor. They may be unpleasant to drink until the tannins or strong flavor has softened. Many people believe aerating a wine can hasten this softening.” The Ruffino I will describe later is an example of an expensive wine that is unpleasant until it has a chance to breathe,
“Wines continue to change after bottling. That’s the reason for aging wine. But those changes – chemical reactions – can produce off-putting gases as a by-product. Some wines, especially those with more than a little bottle age, are surrounded by funky or “off” aromas when the bottle is opened. Aerating such a wine can help separate the good, developed wine from the unattractive gases.”
“All wines change over time as they are exposed to oxygen. Some become substantially more complex and expressive. Actively aerating these wines brings out their potential.”
Readers of this review know how disappointed they are when they go to a restaurant and pay for an expensive bottle of wine only to find when they take the first sip that they are disappointed with their purchase. But if they don’t drink all the wine immediately, a great change comes over the wine during the meal and what was unpleasant becomes delightful.
For example, Chianti is one of my favorite wines and let’s say I am opening a bottle of Ruffino Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti Classico 2008. This wine will be undrinkable right out of the bottle, as mentioned earlier. It needs at least a half hour to breathe and an hour would be better. What a difference that hour makes. A harsh wine becomes smooth, complex, and delightful.
Can we speed up this process with an aerator? The folks at 3s Wine Aerator say “yes” and they sent me their aerator to test to prove their assertion. BTW, I have two other aerators so I have two points of comparison with the 3S.
The 3S Aerator has six settings. My wife and I experimented with a variety of red wines and we used setting one and then setting six. We both agreed that the wine aerated on six was softer and smoother than on the one setting. Just as advertised, the aerator worked to help the various wines we tested to open, breathe, and develop.
The 3S is now sitting on my desk in my office. It is a well-made and substantial looking aerator with six setting to choose from. I just took it to the sink in the bathroom and first set the aerator on 1 and filled it with water and then timed the release of water – about six seconds. When I filled the aerator with water and then set it on six and released the water – again, about six seconds elapsed before all the water was gone.
I peered into the aerator from both ends as if it were a kaleidoscope to try to see what happened as I went from setting one to six. Sorry, I was unable to see that the change in setting made much difference inside this gadget. Perhaps the folks at 3S will comment on this review and tell us what happens as we change settings.
Conclusion: If you have a bottle of Yellow Tail merlot you don’t need to worry about an aerator, although aerating the wine is not a bad idea. The Yellow Tail is a young and inexpensive wine that won’t change much with the aerator or in your glass. But, if you have a fine wine – how about a Chateau Lafite Rothschild? Now, you want to take every precaution to be sure you get the most out of your wonderful wine. Aerating it and then letting it sit for a good half hour in your glass would be a smart thing to do. In fact, using the aerator for every good wine you pour can’t hurt and is more than likely to do some good.
Good wines are expensive. $18.99, the cost of the aerator, is cheap by contrast to the money spent on the good Ruffino or great Chateau Lafite Rothschild. I think it’s a good idea to have the 3S Wine Aerator handy for those special occasions when you are serving a fine wine. Recommended.
It's very simple to use and very compact so I can hide it in my cupboard without my kids getting a hold of it. It has six speed settings for how fast or slow you want to aerate your wine. 0 being the fastest setting and 6 being the slowest. First I tasted some sweet red before I used the aerator and it just didn't taste good. Then I poured some into a glass using the aerator on setting number 6 and oh my goodness it tasted so much better. Shamefully admitting I drank two glasses of wine using this aerator because it tasted that good. The wine didn't taste as dense, that is the best way I can describe it, or rather less like the bottle and more like the natural flavorings it was intended to have. I will definitely be using this little aerator every time I go for a glass of wine, hopefully in the future I won't overdo it like I did with my first use. Now I can finally enjoy my wines again.
All in all I highly recommend this aerator. I did receive this product for free/discounted price in exchange for my unbiased review. I will be posting a video of the aerator in use to my YouTube channel and will share the link here when it is up and running
I seen the 3S Wine Aerator & figured I'd give it a try. I am very pleased I did! The wine has a whole new flavor & I actually enjoy my red wine now.
(In my photos please excuse the use of a tea cup, still unpacking & the wine glasses have yet to be found.)
The 3S Wine Aerator comes with a stand for when not in use & a nice little storage bag. The aerator itself is a great size! It is not too small that it makes it difficult to pour wine through but, not so large that it has to ait out on a counter or takes up a ton of space. I can store it in my kitchen drawer with the othwr kitchen gadgets, on my counter in the corner or even in my cabinet with the glasses.
It has six speed settings for how fast or slow you want to aerate your wine, with 0 being the fastest and 6 being the slowest.
The dial is easy to turn to change the setting. It is also easy to keep clean, I ran hot water through both ends & stood it up in the drying rack.
For the amount of money you spend on a nice bottle of wine, the 3S Wine Aerator is the perfect companion to help you enjoy & savor the true flavors of your wine without having to wait for the wine to "breathe" for an hour or more.
I would recommend the 3S Wine Aerator to my friends & family.
