We purchased 14 bottles of wine from an Italian winery not a store that regularly ships internationally. The vineyard put the bottles in three, 6-bottle boxes and said the bottles would be fine for travel. While the bottles jiggled inside the box inserts, the inserts & boxes were extremely sturdy. We were able to fit the three boxes in the wine bag, with still enough room for another 6-bottle box. When we checked in with airline at Rome airport, the clerk was not convinced the boxes inside the wine bag would withstand the handling from the baggage handlers because when he pressed on the bag sides, there was A LOT of empty space . So, we were told to pack a lot of our clothes around the edges to create padding. We had so many clothes in this wine bag, one luggage was practically empty.
So some things to consider:
--- Upon leaving the U.S., my husband and I each had one, under-weight, checked bag and when we were leaving Italy, the Wine Check bag constituted one extra bag, which cost us $100. This was just an extra bag cost, not a cost based on weight, as our bags were NOT weighed when leaving Italy.
---We almost think it might have been better to use wine skins and pack the wine in our luggage.
---Another thought is to buy the insert, roll our clothes and pack them in the wine inserts, while the other checked luggage is lightly packed. Then when we buy wine, the wine is put in the insert and the clothes go into the other luggage, thus saving extra baggage costs.
---If you are traveling abroad, another thing to consider when you bring it back yourself, is duty on the wine. Fortunately, we did not pay any extra fees, even though we did put it on the declaration form. However, if you're a frequent traveler, you know each airport is different in executing their regulations.
---Finally, the picture of this product makes the rolling of this bag look effortless. You really need to use the strap, not the handle, to roll this bag when its full of wine. It gets heavy, so keep in mind your travel plans, especially if you're using trains, going over bridges, cobblestones, etc.
In the end, we had a case of wine that fit nicely in the box and was easy to check through to our airport in Washington DC. The wine survived the trip spectacularly. The bag that the attendant placed The Wine Check into in Portugal ripped off at some point during transfer so the bag itself got scuffed up (so much for the fragile sticker), but the wine was good.
I highly recommend this for travelers who love wine!
We've flown Delta, American, United and Southwest using this shipper and though we've occasionally been asked contents, or (once) asked to sign a waiver saying the airline was not responsible for damaged/spoiled contents, have yet to have a problem, either with being allowed to travel with it, or having the contents arrive damaged. The case itself has also held up great and still looks like new.
Being able to take your own wine on vacation, in lieu of paying high restaurant/hotel cost mark-ups or taking your chances at a local wine shop, will cover the cost of this bag in less than a single use. It also doubles as a great transport home for dirty laundry or souvenir purchases once the wine inside is depleted. Or, if you're going the other way, and plan to buy wine to bring home, it can be folded fairly small and carried inside another case on the way out.
All in all, a great purchase for serious wine fans.
