It does produce a noticeable noise when running, so I don't think it's suitable for use in a common area. At first we had it near our entertainment area, but the noise it made while running became annoying during cards, conversation or while watching TV. It does not accommodate larger bottles, so some of the taller bottles will have to find a home elsewhere.
UPDATE 7/20/13: We've now had this for almost 5 years and it's starting to show its age. Condensation forms on the bottom tray and has to be wiped out on a regular basis - otherwise water will come out with the bottom bottles when extracted. It doesn't seem to be able to maintain temperature below 58 degrees at an ambient of 75. I've done all the maintenance I can like cleaning the heat exchanger fins. At an average cost of around $35/yr I don't think I'll be buying another.
UPDATE 10/24/15: After letting it limp along for the last two years the unit gave out. Out of curiosity I performed a little troubleshooting - the power supply was smoked. I found a replacement board on Alibaba for $85 with free shipping. Since this can be replaced with this Igloo FRW133 12-Bottle Wine Cooler with Digital Temperature Display, Black for the same price, it's not worth repairing.
If you're in the market for a thermoelectric wine cooler of this size, don't spend any more than that. They all seem to use the same control and power supply and the higher price for the Wine Enthusiast is unjustified.
It looks very nice and runs so quietly I can't hear it at all. It took about 8 hours to reach the temperature I set (54) and it has stayed on that temp without interruption for the 10 days we've had it. (I have not put a secondary thermometer inside to see if it's precisely at this temp, but for my casual wine collecting purpose, it's just fine if it's a couple of degrees above or below.)
I'd recommend. It was a good price and works well as an alternative to a built-in unit.
Update: It's been almost one year since I got this fridge and it still working like a charm. Maintains its temperature and operates silently.
One gripe I have that is not well documented is the noise this little fridge makes. The buzzing (maybe whirring?) noise is quite annoying and surprisingly loud. This is right next to a full-size fridge that is silent. Interesting. I sit closer to a custom PC with six fans and this little fridge is louder when cooling. The noise is my biggest complaint. The feet should be rubber too as it will slide when opening without the weight of several bottles.
It looks good, seems well built, the temp. adjuster and read out seem accurate and the led light is a nice touch.
Solid four stars if this lasts five + years. A product like this is about longevity.
Ultimately, this is an ok counter fridge for your apartment or your house when you are bringing things up for short term storage. But I would not use it as I have which was to preserve wine over long periods of time. It's just too much of a hassle and definitely at this new higher price.
* After 4 years it still works perfectly.
* It's the perfect size to fit on top of your counter and under above cabinets.
* It looks great.
* It keeps proper temperature.
* The space for each bottle is too tight. I had to remove the bottom rack to have any hope of actually fitting 12 bottles inside.
* Every now and then a bottle will be too long and won't fit inside (generally whites)
