Introduction

Wine and the Thirst for Knowledge

If a hundred years from now someone happens to be writing the history of wine in our times, he will have no choice but to call the end of the twentieth century the golden age of wine. What characterizes the last two decades is an astonishing improvement in quality, unfaltering ambition among producers, and a seemingly infinite demand for fine wines in the marketplace. We are encountering an undreamed of enthusiasm in many parts of the world for the drink that?except for water and milk?is the oldest in the world. Grape growing has expanded into new regions, and winemaking has undergone significant innovations, quickly absorbing and applying the discoveries of modern oenology. All these new developments need to be absorbed into our thinking as well. We need a new, comprehensive reference work to understand what it is we are drinking and to appreciate the work that goes into offering our senses pleasures they never enjoyed before.
Wine: From Grape to Glass was written to quench the exquisite thirst for knowledge that lovers of wine feel arising within whenever they uncork a bottle of fine wine.

Fabled Vintages and Other Good Libations

Wine: From Grape to Glass was written not for those who exclusively love French, German, or Italian wines, or for that matter, any other particular wines. It is for those who will drink this today and that tomorrow, but are always reaching for the best. And what is best? That depends on each eclectic wine lovers mood. Yesterday it was a simple country wine brought back from a vacation. Today you go through the ceremony of opening one of the grand, awe-inspiring vintages. Tomorrow it might be a completely unknown wine, maybe from a country only recently added to the worlds wine atlas. All of these wines have their own personalities. On the wine merchants shelf, they stand side by side. What differentiates them is their prices. This book helps to explain why one wine may cost a hundred dollars, another only ten. It tries to provide a key to the complex language of wine, and to illuminate the science of winemaking while honoring the art that creates great wines.

Take Part in the Wine Revolution

Drinking wine is an experience. For this reason, a wine book should not be dry reading.
Wine: From Grape to Glass is a book that presents the reader with the visual experience of the nature of wine, of the way it grows, of how it is made out of grapes. You will learn about whole?bunch pressing and find out what is meant by bâtonnage. Your eyes will see where great taste comes from and where the famous vineyard of Romanée?Conti is located. You will be shown why wines age faster in small barrels than in large ones and why it is sometimes a good idea to decant even a young wine. The book goes into its subject deeply enough to ensure that while you taste the characteristic flavors of great wines, you become conscious of exactly what you are experiencing. All the information is important: it makes clear what separates a good wine from a great one. Only when wine connoisseurs appreciate what winemakers do can they grow with the revolutionary changes now taking place in the world of wine.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This book is written by a German, Jens Priewe, and translated into English by Alan Paddle. The translation is so fluid, one would think it was written originally in English. This is a work of scholarship by a wine lover who covers virtually all aspects of wine making and wine appreciation. I have nine books on wine, but this is by far the best.

This book will not tell you which wine to buy, but how to understand, appreciate and select wines for your own enjoyment. You will learn a great deal about the different kind of wines and how they are made. It even tells you about the different cork removers in a depth I have never seen before. I wish more attention had been paid to Australian wines, but all in all, every single country that produces decent wine is discussed and their comparative advantages highlighted. The coverage of French wines is absolutely the best I have ever seen, and of course, German wines are treated in depth.

Richly illustrated with beautiful color pictures, this book is a joy to read. I recommend it with the highest enthusiasm.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
Every summer my husband and I travel to Napa and Sonoma counties in California to enjoy some music, art festivals, and especially the wine experience. I say "experience," because for us, casual drinkers who enjoy a glass with dinner each night, the fun is the ambiance in the tasting rooms. The "chatter" from the folks behind the counters. They pour a little, "Try this, now taste that." It's fun and somewhat enlightening. Much more enlightening is Jens Priewe's WINE FROM GRAPE TO GLASS. This book covers everything, it seems, from bottle openers to the soil around the roots of the vines. And, in-between, the grapes and the wine. So many grapes, so many varieties of each, plus a little history and perspective of the wine customs of the particular country or region. There are sections about wine-making, wine aging, wine marketing, and wine drinking. A reader will learn which cheese to pair with various wines, and which wines to pair with different foods and courses of meals. It's all very interesting, and well-written for a consumer, in plain language that explains but doesn't over explain. We are enjoying this handsome edition.

Beautifully produced coffee table sized book covering all things wine. Book is expansive with 312 pages all of which utilize full color printing and nicely presented with a good mix of photography and text on each page. The first half of the book covers how to drink, taste and appreciate wine along with principles of wine cultivation and the winemaking process itself. The final half of the book covers wines of the world with regional and country specific breakdowns on wine cultivation regions and hallmark varietals and history of production. Its a thorough and easy to parse book well suited for neophytes and connoisseurs alike.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
As an overall guide to wine, this book is an excellent choice. It covers the whole range - types of wines, how it is made, how to serve, types of glasses, vineyard considerations, geography and the major wine areas. This is great for someone who wants to learn more about wine in general. It has an abundance of beautiful illustrations and is very comprehensive in scope/breadth. That said, I found the 2nd half of the book, which deals with wines by country and regions within each country, to be rather cursory, much like reading an article in Sunset Magazine about it. I didn't deduct any stars because of this because going into detail for each country would require a whole lot more space and I don't think that was the intent of the author to get that specific. The reader would be better off purchasing books on the specific region(s) they're interested in because they only get brief coverage here. This is a very fine, easily readable book for the layperson who wants to know wine better. It gives a good general overview of all the main areas.

If you are a wine connoisseur, collector, wine lover, or just enjoy knowing about your wines, this is the book for you. The book is stunning, with over 1,000 color illustrations that can be looked at over and over again. While it can be called a coffee table book, it is so much more than that. It is an encyclopedic book about wine, from the grape to the table.

This book is a 4th edition and has been greatly expanded. It includes information on how wine grapes are grown, how wine is produced, and how best to savor your wine. It has a wonderful section on grape harvesting, fermentation and aging. Added to this new edition are wines from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, China, Japan and South America.

Anyone with an interest or curiosity about how grapes make it to the table as wine will love this wonderful book.
