Like many other people, I grew tired of continually increasing rates for cable tv, especially when most of what I watch is on the major networks anyway. Having read recommendations here and elsewhere, this was supposed to be one of the better indoor antennas, so I gave it a shot.
A few qualifiers before I give my opinions, I live in an apartment, so outdoor antennas were a no-go. This item was tested and used in a big city (Columbus, OH). I've been using it for a few weeks. On to what you want to know:
    The Good:
Picture Quality: The off-air reception picture is great, I get perfectly clear HD channels from ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX as well as each of their secondary non-HD channels. The image looks even better to me than the cable signal did and there are no side-bars or compression from the top and bottom; the picture fills the whole screen.
Reception: It really does matter where it is and what direction the antenna faces, but once you find a good location (mine isn't particularly close to a window) it works great. Occasionally, there is a weak signal and a channel breaks up a bit (it's only the network furthest from me), but a slight adjustment of antenna position cures that pretty easily.
    The Not So Good:
As mentioned, you may have to deal with weak signals at times depending on your proximity to the broadcast tower, and if the signal is too weak there is no picture or sound. This is common to any antenna, though.
Ease of Assembly: I found the instructions that came with the antenna to be largely unhelpful. The figures were not all I needed to see and the written instructions weren't very helpful most of the way. Still, it's not that hard to put together, and you'll eventually figure it out (it only took me about a half-hour and that was with the confusion).
Space: It's about 2 feet long, so you do need to make sure you have some room to put it. That's not such a big deal, but it's a consideration worth noting.
    Bottom Line
If you're content with major networks, don't want to pay for subscription television, and live near broadcast towers, then this antenna does a really nice job. It cost less than a single month's cable bill to buy and there is no recurring fee. Some assembly issues aside, the reception, picture quality and ease of setup on the tv made this antenna a great purchase. Just keep in mind that location will make a big difference in how effective it is.

    UPDATE:
After checking online, there are several other television stations in the area that the antenna picks up well including 3 PBS stations and a few others. Don't trust your tv's initial channel search, see if there are any listings of off-air stations in your area; it may be surprising how many you really receive.

First some background--I have had access to satellite HD and OTA HD from the second generation of sets. I watch both Direct TV and OTA broadcasts. I have lived close and far away from broadcasting towers (including Denver, Missoula, and Grand Junction). I have talked with local station network engineers about how they broadcast, the direction and spread of their signals, etc--to improve my own reception. I have observed how OTA digital has developed and improved over time. I know the difference between UHF and VHF signals and antennas.

I have had a LOT of antennas. For instance, in Missoula (MT), I initially had the old RS double bow tie antenna (UHF) tied to a non-amp'd rabbit ears antenna (VHF) to collect all the signals from the locals. Then the broadcasters moved their towers to a higher position, and I was left in a valley with spotty reception. I had to put up an outside antenna.

I recently moved to Grand Junction, CO. After trying my first solution, a combo RS amplified antenna, I realized that I was not going to get the local CBS or NBC signals without some more research. Antennaweb provides a nice resource for positioning antennas, along with distances from your house. KREX (local CBS) at 253 degrees and just over 20 miles away? NO signal. Not even a hint of a signal. KKCO (local NBC), in the same exact position.... with the RS rabbit ears.... 35-40% signal strength and spotty during watching. All other stations, at 110 degrees and less than 10 miles away... over 75% signal strength. I wanted KREX and CBS for football.

I contacted the local engineer armed with my information from Antennaweb and my signal strengths. Not much forthcoming help from KREX--so I decided to spend a bit more money and try the highly regarded Winegard SS-3000.

It is a winged antenna with a plastic deflector mounted on the front. It is also amplified, for which I have found works when it works, but sometimes makes things worse. Both UHF/VHF capable. Putting it together did require me to look at the directions, but it was simple. Hooking it up was just as easy. So how did it work for me?

All of the signals I could pick up before with my RS rabbit ears came in slightly better with 5-10% signal strength improvement (75-95% overall). For KKCO, the marginal NBC station 20 miles away at 253 degrees, the improvement was significant from 35-40% up to 60-65%... making the signal watchable with no breakups. For KREX, where I had no signal? Still no signal.

Me thinks that KREX is not broadcasting at full power, and there is plenty of local web based evidence to support that contention. With full digital moving forward in 2009, maybe things will improve. I really just wanted to know if I needed an outside antenna--and so far I do not have enough information to support that decision. Why put up an outside antenna when you have a great signal on 90% of the OTA stations, and you do not fully understand why you have absolutely no signal on one station?

So I am receiving one more station consistently better than before for my purchase of the SS-3000. Is it worth the money? I suppose that some might say that reception of one more station might be worth it... I am not sure. But I am keeping the SS-3000 and will continue to use it. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I think that for those that have not purchased a variety of antennas, or are considering buying their first antenna for reception of digital signals.... this is a great choice.

It is important to understand what types of signals you have in your local area (UHF, VHF), where the local signals are coming from, and what interferences you may have in your area. I think it is also important to try your cheapest antenna first... that $12 RS UHF ring/VHF rabbit ears set up. You may be very surprised. If that does not work, you should try the Winegard SS-3000. If that does not work, you may need an antenna on your roof, patio, or outside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Wide-Angle Antenna
Reviewed in Canada on October 21, 2011
***Note: this review is probably most helpful to those who are NOT in an optimal location to receive over-the-air broadcasts, due to angles or obstructions.***

I live on the 5th floor in North York (northern part of Toronto) and my place does not allow outdoor antennas. Also, every OTA signal is coming from the south (downtown Toronto and Buffalo) but this apartment faces the opposite direction. Not just that, but there is also a lot of "stuff" to cause interference in this place... so with any indoor antenna, I did not expect miracles. I purchased a USB TV Tuner and tested 4 antennas. Here are my findings:

    1. Mini omni-directional antenna that came with my TV Tuner

This thing was so small that it is more like a gumball machine accessory than anything else. It's basically included so that the TV Tuner is considered "complete out-of-the-box". If placed just right, I picked up 2 channels perfectly. I'm sure if you live really close to the broadcast (like downtown Toronto), it could do an effective job.... but with poor range and no amplification, it's not great.

    = 2.5 / 5

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

    2. RCA ANT1450B Multi-Directional Digital Flat Amplified Home Theater Antenna

I borrowed this from a friend, and it was my first test with a high-rated antenna. Despite being multi-directional, I am dealing with some harsh angles for the signal to pull from, which makes anything and everything very difficult for this antenna. It does great if you have a relatively clean line-of-sight downtown, as my friend who owns it does and gets close to 30 channels. I got about 5 or 6 channels and it was extremely fussy about where I placed it, requiring a lot of fidgeting and adjusting to pick up those channels consistently. Some channels only worked with the unit flat on its back, and others only worked with it propped up at an angle. Definitely not ideal in this situation.

    = 3 / 5

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

    3. Nexxtech 150-1880 Amplified Antenna

I borrowed this from another friend, and it worked relatively well. However, it still required being angled very delicately in one position. It was very directional, and if I repositioned it to get one choppy channel to come in cleanly, I would lose a different channel. Like the RCA unit, it works best with a direct line of sight, or at least something close. If you have that, this thing also does a solid job.

    = 3 / 5

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

    4. Winegard SS-3000 Amplified Indoor UHF/VHF Antenna

I am impressed. While I get around the same number of channels that I got with the RCA and Nexxtech units, I don't have to adjust its placement to pick up those feeds. As other reviewers have stated around the web, the wide reflector on this antenna makes it very forgiving of placement and angle -- what Winegard calls "Scatter Plane Technology". I can't stress enough that I live in a spot that doesn't do well with OTA, but at least now I have a "set it and forget it" atmosphere. Overall, I think this is a great unit. It does what I need it to do, and it should work for you even if your line-of-sight is WAY off. I don't get the 30+ channels like others, but the SS-3000 makes the best out of a bad situation. Also, given how strong it picks up my feeds in my cursed location, I am sure this unit does an extraordinary job if your placement is more optimal. If I move to a better place someday, I feel confident that I have an antenna that does a very respectable job in a variety of situations.

The unit itself was relatively easy to assemble. It doesn't feel like it would break if dropped, but I still wouldn't suggest doing so. I'm not going to comment on the width like others -- the dimensions are in the description, so just make sure you have the space it needs.

    = 4.5 / 5

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

I'd also like to note that the other antennas mentioned above are by no means terrible. The scores given are determined on how they performed in my given scenario. If you are located somewhere where OTA signals are easier to grab, I'm sure they'll do great by you. However, if you're in an unfortunate spot like me, Winegard's wide-winged solution has its advantages.

Here's hoping my next home will allow a fancy outdoor antenna rig. If it doesn't, no worries: the SS-3000 is a winner.

I live in Markham Ontario and this antenna gives basic viewing of most off air Toronto stations and two Buffalo stations as well. All viewing is High Def and best of all FREE. (The internet gives me other specialty channels.) This antenna assembles quickly, sets up fast. It is worth the price and then some. In fact the hi def picture is cleaner than over cable as the signal hasn't been compressed or screwed with as the cables companies like to do. Go buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but bulky, consider alternatives
Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2012
With Winegard SS-3000, I get 12 to 14 channels from Mississauga (Hurontario St. and QEW), a one-storey house pointing the antenna towards CN Tower direction. The channels I get are:

    5-1 CBC, 9-1 CFTO, 17-1 WNED-HD (PBS), 17-3 WNED-TH, 19-1 TVO, 23-1 WNLO-HD (UPN), 25-1 CBLFT DT (French CBC), 29-1 WUTV (Fox)
29-2 TCN (sometimes, weather temp. dependent?, re-angle antenna), 36-1 CITS-HD (sometimes, weather temp. dependent?, re-angle antenna),
    41-1 CIII-HD (Global), 47-1 OMNI-1, 57-1 CityTV, 69-2 OMNI

Re-angling the antenna towards Buffalo, then ABC channel 7 was available when weather was 10 to 15 degrees during daytime. But after weather got colder, I could no longer get ABC.
I took this same antenna to a friend's 15 storey high-rise unit, at the edge of lake in Southern Etobicoke (Park Lawn Rd. and Lakeshore Blvd) and three additional channels could be obtained channels 2-1, 2-2 (NBC) and channel 4 (CBS) - but position change is needed.

Given the mostly good reviews of this antenna, I am rating this a 5 for now. Quick and free shipping from Amazon.ca. I would like to someday try another one or two antennas for comparison.
Just an FYI: Two other indoor antennas with good reviews (at US-only Amazon.com) are the Mohu "Leaf" and Mohu Plus "Leaf". Google-search does not reveal any Canadian retailer.

    EDIT 2012-09:
Lowered rating after trying out Mohu Leaf Plus. Mohu is paper thin, small and light-weight and gets channels mentioned above without re-positioning; whereas SS-3000 is too wide and heavy in comparison and requires changing position to get some Buffalo channels, re-angle to get Canadian channels. Canadians can order directly from Mohu.

I am currently living in an apartment building downtown Toronto on the 10th floor. There are a lot of buildings around me and I have seen reviews that this antenna was perfect for my location.

It was extremely easy to install, it might have taken me about 10-15 minutes counting the time it took me to take it out of the box.

I am currently getting about 25-30 channels in total most of them local channels but I also get CW, PBS, Fox, ABC and more channels from the US.

I don't mind the size and the colour of the antenna as it matches my TV and TV stand colour.

For the people that are wondering about ditching cable or not, my recommendation is: DO IT. I never really realized how much crap tv there is on cable now. Having the antenna and the Over-the-air channels made me realized how much actual GOOD content there is out there. It was also a nice way to go back to the life of "Oh today in X channel Y show is on!" it really makes you remember the way we used to watch tv before the cable industry exploded and took over our lives. If there is anything that i miss from cable it will probably be some sports channels like Spanish Football (spanish soccer in this part of the world) but I can always stream my games from the internet so its not a big deal at the end of the day.

Final words: I highly recommend this product, I was a little worried at first but the image quality, the reception and the setup made the entire experience very very enjoyable. I don't think I'll get cable anytime soon in the new few years.
