Both units are nearly identical, so either one will accomplish the same goal. Both are adjustable in width up to 60". There are a few minor differences that, in my opinion, make the Wingard a better antenna mount:
1) Winegard came with instructions. Channel Master did not. (Some reviews say Winegard did not come with instructions, but that was not my experience. Instructions are valuable for getting things oriented, but most people will be able to figure it out without instructions. It is just easier to have it diagrammed for you to see what's going on.)
2) Winegard came with all necessary parts. Channel Master was missing 2 lag bolts. (Not expensive, but necessary)
3) Winegard came with nuts that had integral spline-type washers. Channel Master had no washers of any sort. (Had to purchase a box of spline-type washers for the Channel Master install. I use the bolts with spline-type (sharp, ragged, points) washers to tighten down my ground wires to the antenna mount. Makes things easy and secure. The wire (stranded or single) will easily secure to the mount using these washers without any fuss.)
4) Winegard is about $10 less expensive than Channel Master (on Amazon).
One feature of the Channel Master that may or may not be an advantage/ disadvantage: The Channel Master has a zinc chromate coating, which gives the metal a yellowish tinge. This chromate conversion gives better protection against corrosion vs. standard zinc plating alone. So, that is an advantage for the Channel Master. However, in my case, I preferred the silvery-color of the standard zinc coating that the Winegard has for one particular installation -- because its color matched the silver color of my tin roof. So, if color is important to you, those are the facts.
I would recommend the Winegard over the Channel Master for the reasons given. But, in reality, both will do the job. You will pay more for the Channel Master, and may have to buy more parts, but it will ultimately do the same job as the Winegard. I would give 5 stars to the Winegard, and 3.5 or 4 stars to the Channel Master.
This product is solid & heavy duty. When I ordered it I was concerned about its stability. My concerns were slightly diminished when I received it and felt how sturdy it was constructed. My concerns are completely diminished now that it has survived 3 windstorms in as many weeks with wind speeds >50MPH.
It comes with lag screws for mounting that work well if you're able to drill into a stud. For my personal application I needed to drill through a 2X6 and use bolts to hold it in place...so I went down to the hardware store and got my own bolts with locking nuts. As many others have mentioned, the mount does not arrive with assembly instructions. I found everything to be pretty self evident and didn't feel the need to seek directions.
I used a sturdy fiberglass extension ladder. I've heard others installed everything from the roof. If you use the ladder just be prepared to move it around several times and climb up and down quite a bit to get the job done. I found accessing everything from the ladder was the safest approach...I don't like leaning over the edge of the roof.
TIP: When mounting you will drill and attach the long horizontal base bar first. After attaching the first side of the horizontal bar, the bar will hang down vertically while you move your ladder to attach the other side. You will need to tie a string to the hanging end of the bar in order to easily pull it up into place once you climb back up your ladder. Don't risk your neck by swinging or reaching trying to grab hold of the dangling end of the bar. Preparing for this particular step will save you time and potential injury.
I only had to use a 5 foot mast (WINEGARD TB-0005) and had plenty of clearance above the roof line. The antenna, mast, and mount were all installed in roughly 2 hours. Running coax throughout the attic and fishing it down the walls took the remainder of the day, but now the whole house is wired and looks great. I did discover that in some cases pushing cable up from my crawl space was easier than fishing it down from the attic. This part of the project is a 2 or 3 man job. It's much easier to fish things when you have someone on the receiving end.
I did not to use a pre-amplifier, but I did use an amplified splitter (PCT-MA2-4P) in order to send the signal to 4 rooms in my house. I used RG6 coax (mono price website is the best bang for your buck on this) and watched a you tube video to learn how to crimp on the F-connectors myself. If you want to avoid having cable poking out of open holes in your walls get some low-voltage old work electrical boxes (they are orange and available at standard hardware stores). These boxes are designed to retrofit easily into an existing wall and allow you to securely screw in a coax face plate. If you use the amplified splitter, you may need a double coax face plate (I did) to support an 'out' coax for your antennal signal and an 'in' coax supplying power up to the amplifier. You can build your own dual face plate pretty easily with the new modular face plates available at the standard hardware stores.
When all was said and done I spent a little over $100 (my antenna was $25 off craigslist). I spent the equivalent of 1 month of my cable bills on this project and I now enjoy 38 channels of free TV. Well worth the investment to get rid of cable and it's monthly fees.
