Good Wartime Morale Booster With Serious Flaws

"Wing and a Prayer" portrays the experiences of naval torpedo bomber pilots in WW II. The film is well-acted and the story is compelling. However, the film has serious flaws in terms of its historical accuracy. The mission of sending an aircraft carrier all over the Pacific on any mission was neither plausible nor militarily sound in early 1942, Our navy had a grand total of only five carriers available at the time and risking even one to attack and sinking without doing a greater degree of damage to the Japanese was unsound. The story suffers from other flaws: the Avenger torpedo bomber that the pilots fly in the movie were not available until later in 1942. Admittedly, the movie was made while the war was still being fought so that the real story behind the first two carrier engagements of the war, Coral Sea and Midway, could not be accurately portrayed for security reasons. Still, the film is worth a viewing, if only to see what American movie audiences were viewing at the time the war was still being fought.

This is the story of a U.S. Navy ship during the early days of WW II, not long after most of our Pacific fleet had been destroyed at Pearl Harbor. We did have ships coming from the Atlantic fleet, but it takes time to get to the Pacific. This ship's mission was to go to destinations all over the Pacific to attempt to make the enemy believe we had a bigger fleet than we had. It is believed this ruse was concocted by none other than FDR himself, having been Secretary of the Navy previous to his presidency. This film takes you into the lives of the crew and lets you know who they are as people.

I love this movie. Produced during World War II, it is filled with scenes of absolute authenticity because they were actually filmed in the environment that they represent. ("Carrier X" is actually filmed aboard USS Yorktown CV-10) The movie is a highly fictionalized look at the Battle of Midway. Don't view this movie for facts: most of the historic facts are either wrong or missing, largely as a result of either wartime secrecy or because they simply weren't known at the time. Watch this movie to get the feel of what World War II US Naval Aviation was all about. What did the aircraft look like? What about the ships? What's it like to "Bomb the spar"? Watch the crew crash-land in the ocean and release their raft and try to get aboard. Make no mistake about it, this is a wonderful movie as a snapshot back into Naval Aviation in World War II - just don't write a report about it for History Class!

"Wing & A Prayer" is a very well done WWII period war movie. The story line is engrossing, the direction sure-handed, and the acting first rate. Like such jewels as "They Were Expendable", "Bataan", "Guadalcanal Diary", and others, this was a film as much about human beings and their hopes and fears

in the face of harrowing danger as it was about the "boom-boom-rat-tat-tat" of cinematic combat action ( and such emphasis on the human being rather than the bursting shrapnel was the reason why the television series "Combat" was so enormously popular in the 1960s). There is plenty of action, to be sure, though, in "Wing & A Prayer", much of it culled from actual

combat footage and the rest created by Fox's ace special effects

maestro Fred Sersen. Add up the combat footage, the FX wizardry, the direction, the cinematography, the script, and the acting performances, and you see in toto a fine piece of filmmaking.

People often carp about things that really don't matter in movies (continuity errors, etc.), and most all movies about WWII have them. Yes, you see Hellcats doubling for Wildcats at times, and sometimes Hellcats reconfiguring as Corsairs while in flight and then back to Hellcats again. And you generally see "rising sun" painted SBDs or AT-6 Texans impersonating

Japanese aircraft in films....or Sherman or Walker Bulldog tanks "pretending" to be German Tigers, Mark IV Panzers or Panthers. And sometimes M-3 or M-5 light tanks turn "Japanese"

on us. But so what? Filmmakers, at certain points in time, had to "make do" with what they had available to them at time of production (in "To Hell And Back"...movie version...Audie Murphy earns his Medal of Honor atop a TANK...NOT a tank

DESTROYER as in historical reality...again, so what?).

I, for one, just let these little quibbles scoot by and don't worry about them. In the overall context of the stories being told, they don't amount to a thing.

Give "Wing & A Prayer" a break. Its a good flick and the little "bloopers" just don't matter here.

Lastly, to the reviewer who asked the question about the USS Ticonderoga and SBD footage shot aboard that vessel....part of a movie starring Errol Flynn...no, "Wing & A Prayer" isn't it.

Flynn is nowhere to be found in "Wing". The movie you want to see is Warner Bros. 1941 vehicle "Dive Bomber", starring Flynn and Ralph Bellamy. "Dive Bomber" (about flight surgeons working to prevent dive bomber pilots from passing out from G-force

blood drainage from the brain in steep sustained dives)is the movie that a crackpot named Charles Higham cited as an example of Errol Flynn's "nazi spy activities" in a ludicrous book he wrote in the late 1970s. Long since discounted and now justly ridiculed, this author tried to claim that Flynn used his "influence" with Warner Bros. to have "Dive Bomber" filmed in, around, and over Pearl Harbor, so that views of the harbor could be sent to Japan to help prepare for the December 7th attack. This was a preposterous claim as the Japanese spy network in Honolulu had already supplied all the needed intel months before and models and mock-ups were already in use in Japan. Further preposterousness lay in the fact that no one...not even a "star"...could influence filming locations under Hollywood's old studio system. And, lastly, given the

production facts about "Dive Bomber", one has to wonder how a movie shot entirely on location in SAN DIEGO could possibly offer up any "useful intelligence" on PEARL HARBOR!!

At any rate, if one is looking for "family SBD" footage from an Errol Flynn movie, "Dive Bomber" is what you are looking for.

It is what it is, a film made during WW2 while we were still fighting the Japanese and trying to sell war bonds. The plot is not too convincing but the acting is good and you can see lots of familiar faces in the film. This my have been Don Ameche's best dramatic role it certainly was a departure from anything else he ever did. The action scenes of the planes were pretty lame and not at all accurate but they no doubt had to make do with whatever was available. It is a little be better than the worst of films from that era.

There's a lot to dislike about this movie. The title is from the 1943 hit song"coming in on a wing and a prayer" about a bomber limping home from a mission over Germany. Neither the title nor the lyrics fit this film. After watching it a second time I suspect the filming was shot entirely in the sound studio on sets that were constructed specifically to fit the thousands of feet of Navy and Air Force film that fit their story line. Every outdoor shot , whether in the air or on the water, are of talking upper torsos with action footage rolling behind them. There were times when they could not even get that right. A shot of a torpedo closing on a ship's bow was followed by a big explosion.....in the ship's aft section. One of our pilots looks over his shoulder and sees a zero closing fast, followed by a stream of bullets cutting a line of holes in his windshield ......in front of him. The Battle of Midway segment was short but effective except at the end when they called a jap carrier sunk the "Kagi"not the "Akagi". Surprisingly, this picture was nominated for Best Origional Screenplay in 1944.

A surprisingly powerful film. Don Ameche deserved an Oscar or who ever created his character. Found the scenes at the end with the crew on the aircraft carrier listening to the radio transmissions of the combat crews, being particularly striking. True there are more than a fair share of 'hammy' bits, but I still was surprised by the films strengths.
