About the Author

Henry James (1843-1916), American novelist and critic, was an innovator in technique and a distinctive prose stylist. More than any previous writer, James refined the technique of narrating a novel from the point of view of a character, thereby laying the foundations of modern stream-of-consciousness fiction. Among his many acclaimed novels are "The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, The Golden Bowl, "and "The Wings of the Dove.". --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

A very strange story, very strange people. This was not bad, but I prefer The Golden Bowl. If you have limited time, I recommend The Golden Bowl, which is also available for free in Kindle edition. The same review was posted for Volume II.

Not recommended to the modern reader.
Being a great fan of Henry James (LOVED Portrait of a Lady and others) I must say this beats all literature for difficult sentences which don't make sense. I was constantly puzzled as to the meaning as I struggled through each line, sometimes re-reading; yet there is a certain brilliance in James's ability to paint a picture through his convoluted sentences and forms of expression which somehow, magically, still manage to capture an era and convey meaning.
So I did read to the end, but it was a struggle to get through.

Sorry... just couldn't get into it... found it boring and hard to read. Maybe it would have become interesting, but didn't want to waste my time reading something that I couldn't get interested in. I'm probably wrong.

Perhaps I'm a Philistine, but I read this book in my attempt to read all of the Modern Library's Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century and I hated every second of it. It is virtually unreadable. I was only able to complete it by rotely forcing myself to read each word after the other. I could understand neither the characters, the plot, the setting, nor was I entirely certain that any of those simple components of crafting a story were even present. Perhaps this was a great novel in a different time and place, but from my present-day perspective I found it baffling and, frankly, incomprehensible.
