The second was, if anything, worse. I am discarding the third, unread. Life is too short to waste on such tripe.
In book 1, our protagonist has his entire worldview shattered. As he works to uncover a murder, he comes to the realization that the Nazis are destroying the nation he loves. Moreover, all the important people around him are "subversives," working secretly and risking their lives to bring down the Third Reich from within. Our hero's internal struggles are as interesting as his moves to elude the Nazis.
But book 2 throws away what makes the protagonist intriguing by turning him into a super hero. Bullets whiz past him without hitting him. Bombs explode around him, but he's unhurt. A Nazi as big as a heavyweight boxer repeatedly pummels him, but a few pages later he's back in action, apparently unfazed by a vicious beating. It's all so cliche.
If you want WW2 spy novels with some intelligence and depth, stick with Ken Follett.
