This is the second in a trilogy that I unfortunately purchased on speculation. I was hoping that the second would be better than the first, which was completely unbelievable.
The second was, if anything, worse. I am discarding the third, unread. Life is too short to waste on such tripe.

Whereas book 1 was a taut psychological thriller, book 2 comes off like a shoddy action movie aimed at 13-year-old boys.

In book 1, our protagonist has his entire worldview shattered. As he works to uncover a murder, he comes to the realization that the Nazis are destroying the nation he loves. Moreover, all the important people around him are "subversives," working secretly and risking their lives to bring down the Third Reich from within. Our hero's internal struggles are as interesting as his moves to elude the Nazis.

But book 2 throws away what makes the protagonist intriguing by turning him into a super hero. Bullets whiz past him without hitting him. Bombs explode around him, but he's unhurt. A Nazi as big as a heavyweight boxer repeatedly pummels him, but a few pages later he's back in action, apparently unfazed by a vicious beating. It's all so cliche.

If you want WW2 spy novels with some intelligence and depth, stick with Ken Follett.

This is just as good as the first novel " The Black Orchestra " it has many twists and turns it seems like Kurt is moving from one crisis to another without getting caught he's one step away from death using the SS against the Gestapo. I liked it as much as I did the first one the author keeps the pace moving.

I was pleasantly surprised by the content of this sequel. Generally sequels lack the force of the first book but Toner was able to develop the characters well. the only downer was the death of on a character late the book.

After reading the Black Orchestra, I was looking forward to Wings of the Eagle but found it disappointing. The tale was a blend of World War II and James Bond - an unconvincing mix. There were staggering technological exaggerations in the story: Movie cameras which could project images instantly on to large screen displays, miniature radio controlled bombs which could be detonated by Morse code sequences. This was the nineteen forties, radios used valves and digital technologies were non existent. The author may as well have equipped his heroes with mobile phones and Semtex. The plot was shallow and predictable, full of unlikely coincidences and the characters were poorly developed. This book will sit on the shelf with my Biggles annuals

The Wings of the Eagle (WW2 spy thriller): Black Orchestra book 2 (The Black Orchestra) This second novel in the series is even more spellbinding than the first and proves JJ Toner is a WWII spy thriller writer worth reading. Just as The Black Orchestra was based on a real anti-Nazi espionage group called The Red Orchestra in WWII (though the members were former Communists who fought in the Spanish Civil War), Toner carries on delving into a little known connection between Nazi espionage in Ireland and how British Intelligence turned it to their advantage. Now I have to carry on to read Book 3 in the series.

A terrific and exciting story very well told! This anti Nazi group has been written of many times but I believe never as well as in this book. If WWII factual drama interests you you'll love this story as I did,

This really is a 5* effort but not quite perfection! hence my 4* review. It is well written, fast moving and a quick page turner. After reading the forerunner novel I got straight on with this one and read it in two sittings. It was hard to put down. A previous review said it was far fetched, perhaps in places it is but it is still a good read. As a new author myself, "The Frenchman's Daughters" a WW2 fact based fiction action adventure, I know just how difficult it is to produce a work that brings everything together in a believable story. Readers have to remember that these are "fiction novels" and just enjoy the characters and the pace allowing for the author's "artistic license." If you do, you will really enjoy this book as I did and, you will look to reading the next one. Thanks Mr. Toner. Paul Sinkinson.
