Review
"Ken Follett has combined the best of his journalistic skills and his flair for crackling fiction into a nonfiction work that's sure to be read. . . . This is one time when the mad dogs of the world were soundly defeated by the indomitable Yankee spirit and derring-do. . . . On Wings of Eagles soars." —The Kansas City Star

"Rich in atmosphere, character, and dialogue. . . . Follett is a pro's pro. . . . If this is not a major motion picture, somebody should kick Hollywood back to life." —New York Daily News

The next time it crossed my mind I searched on Amazon and found that the book had been a big best-seller. I ordered it and could not put it down. I read it in 2 sittings, which is unprecedented for me. I am usually to busy to read at all, but I put everything aside once I got started on the book. Once I finished, my wife read it and enjoyed it every bit as much.
The quite literally incredible events and getting to know the personalities and insights of all the people involved, including the employees and wives at home, pulled you into the action and emotion.
The book has been around quite a while, but still a very exciting read. Even if it's now history rather than recent current events as originally published. In fact, I would expect that if the book had been a work of fiction, it would have been every bit as exciting a story. But it being a true event, with real people amplifies the excitement for me.
Ross Perot should have been elected president. He just wasn't photogenic, but he had more cajones than most men! Carter had none!
Another great book and story from Ken Follett...Well done!
The key players are resourceful, dogged and never give up. Their goal is to get the two EDS employees out of a brutal jail and get them, the rescuers and the rest of the American EDS staff safely home.

Well it turned out to be a dull endless list and explanation of who was who. The action sequences were as exciting as an episode of Postman Pat and the whole tale was like wading through treacle. I ploughed on to the end ...it never got any better. Sorry Ken lets put this one down to a very off day or two and move on. I breathed a BIG sigh of relief when I finished it.
This is a written documentary of true life events, told as it happened (Follett interviewed all the participants), and quite frankly Ross Perot came out of this looking very good indeed (bear in mind that Perot was a billionaire Republican and Follett a left wing ex-Labour MP). An amazing story, well-told - and I've no idea why it wasn't made into a movie (though we now have "Argo", a similar story). Highly recommended.
It leaves you wondering what the American government of President Carter and its various agencies and embassies were doing about the situation. The answer is, not a lot.
The reality is that it was left to the boss of a private company to arrange, pay for and execute an escape plan for his employees from a situation which could have gone horribly wrong and been fatal for all those involved.
Is it a good read? In parts. Is it one to read again? No.
