Jane Ira Bloom has a large discography but although she has some newer albums, I purchased this older edition after listening to samples .... and I am pleased. Her horn technique is excellent, strong and pure of tone; the track compositions are clever and complex; and the groove entrains. She is supported by keyboardist Dawn Clement, bassist Mark Helias, and drummer Bobby Previte. At times, Bloom utilizes live electronics to alter her saxophone sound. The album includes ballads and uptempo pieces, including a funky blues and walking bass lines, Freud's Convertible and also Airspace. The tracks Ending Red Songs and Adjusting to Midnight feature Clement's stately piano work. The band explores the edges, and Frontiers in Science tends toward the abstract, with fractured meter until mid way, and then engages propulsive drive. Live Sports appropriately bounces and twirls. The only unoriginal tune is I Could Have Danced All Night, which is taken s-l-o-w. The bonus track is an .mp3 file, Singularity, which refers to the astrophysics concept of a blackhole collapsing to a mathematical point where normal laws of time-space do not occur; the piece snatches phrases of earlier pieces, including the easily recognizable My Fair Lady work. It seems that the black hole is absorbing information at its event horizon and jumbling the music. After her music education at Yale and moving to New York, Bloom has worked with Mark Dresser, Charlie Haden, Bob Brookmeyer, Julian Priester, Jay Clayton, and Fred Hersch. She composed some pieces commissioned by NASA and she even has an asteroid named for her.

There are few jazz recordings released in the recent past that measure up to the originality and creativity as WINGWALKER. Strong words of praise? Yes, but spend time with simply a couple of tracks from this astonishingly well performed and equally superb recording technique (Jim Anderson and Akihiro Nishimura need to be credited) and the praise is bound to be understood.

Jane Ira Bloom is the 'star' soprano saxophone ('& live electronics") here and she is gifted. Not only has she technically master her instrument as well as any classical musician of this instrument, but she also adds the glamour of knowing how to make the sax sound like a human voice singing from the heart. She is simply amazing. The CD combines her own very excellent compositions (especially 'Ending Red Songs', 'Her Exacting Light' and the title song) with a solo spin on a tune from 'My Fair Lady' - an apropos metaphor - showing us just how far her creativity can carry 'I could have danced all night'! Mesmerizing.

Bloom works with first-rate musicians - Dawn Clement, piano (both regular and Fender Rhodes), Mark Helias, bass, and Bobby Previte, drums: listen to their perfect unison and phrasing on 'Airspace' opening! Many of Blooms compositions are so complex and well written they could easily be programmed on classical contemporary music programs. Bloom's resume reads like an outline of how extensive one musician's influence can go; she is far more than just an accomplished musician and composer - she has enhanced the fields of film, dance, teaching, lecturing, and improving the status of mankind! This is one fine album (in every way) brought to us by a truly exemplary human being. Grady Harp, January 11

There is no questioning the fine musicianship in this offering from Jane Ira Bloom. However, for me, this course has left me feeling slightly unsatisfied. This is contemplative music, but is less jazz and more impressionistic. Bobby Previte's obtuse leanings are evident in this recording. I prefer the past, more bop/ post-bop oriented music from Bloom. This is like trying to digest sunlight and air, wonderful and enjoyable in spots - but, as a whole, not that filling.
