Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier
4 Fan Speeds
In Manual Mode the air purifier will continuously operate at the chosen fan speed (Low, Medium, High, Turbo). Choose Low or Medium for near silent cleaning and High or Turbo for maximum air flow and cleaning power.
Smart Sensors & Auto Mode
Utilizing our Smart Sensors the 5500-2 consistently monitors the air in your environment. The LED indicator displays the indoor air quality on a scale of good to poor (Blue - Amber - Red). When the unit senses a change in air quality, it automatically adjusts the fan speed to optimally clean the environment.
Sleep Mode senses the amount of ambient light in the room, adjusts the fan speed, and dims the indicator lights to provide a quiet clean that does not disturb sleep.
Filter Replacement Indicator
When the filters needs to be replaced, the Filter Replacement Indicator LED will illuminate. After replacing the filters, Reset the Filter Replacement Indicator by using a pin or needle to press the Filter Reset Button.

I ordered this product doing minimal research. I was wondering why it made me feel lightheaded the first few days although the air smelled clean. The light headed feeling lead me to my investigation. There is an option to disable the plasma wave. It is suppose to decrease the amount of ozone. On the 3rd day of having it, I turned it on and left to the kitchen. I smelled a strong smoke smell and ran to the living room where I saw the air quality sensor with a bright red color. The smoke smell was coming out of the purifier. I unplugged it and I’m returning it ASAP. Time to go back to my researching for a better quality one.
It's gone too. Dusting twice a day still didn't help before. It's simply not there. In addition to a wood house, one end of the house is all glass....so even after I dusted there was always "glitter in the air" as my toddler called it. It's gone as well.
It might be all in my head, but I swear my mood and energy are better too. (Could be because the house appears clean, or it could be in my head...either way...I consider this a win!) If you have any issues with this kind of stuff, look into getting one. I wish I would have long before this! I posted this on social media and 5 of my friends have ordered it now too. We are getting a second one for the lower level of the house. We have an open floor plan and it covers a very large area. Homes with out open floor plans may want a second to rotate in sleeping areas.
***To date 6 friends/family ordered and love theirs too! Great Buy!!
**UPDATE** It's February 2019. We have 3 of them now...
In shopping for an air purifier I found various forms of misleading information regarding one stage of filtering called ionizing (plasma, ion). It is true that if you create an intense electrical field you can strip electrons of particles such as dust to make the dust electrically charged and therefore be attracted to an anode plate be collected instead of in the floating in the air. This same process may also kill bacteria and mold. But it is also true that the same mechanism strips electrons off of gasses such as oxygen and nitrogen. When oxygen is affected by the ionizer it becomes ozone. Ozone is a very unstable, highly-reactive, oxidizer. Think of it as a free-radical that wants to bond with something and most likely make something bad or at least unintended. It is toxic. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) limits for ozone emission concentration is 0.050 parts per million or better yet 50 parts per billion. For every billion molecules or air you are not allowed to exceed 50 molecules of ozone. That is a very, very, very small amount.
It would seem like the fact that CARB has set this limit then everything should be ok. Well, the irritating ingredient in smog is ozone. On smoggy days ozone levels often exceed 100 ppm. During 2017 in Southern California ozone exceeded 100 ppb for 145 days in a row. Smog related ozone tends to drop every night. But if you are using an ionizer 24/7 and add its ozone output to the background levels of ozone you could create a real health hazard. The NIOSH recommended exposure limit for ozone is 100 ppb. According to NIOSH, Ozone levels of 500 ppb or higher are considered immediately dangerous to life or health.
For filtering a mechanical filter is safer – coarse washable pre-filter, heap filter, and activated carbon are all you really need.

Where the unit falters is on the lower fan settings, especially in relation to the Auto mode. Although rated to 350 square feet, on the lower settings the purifier seems to effectively gather and eject air over a much smaller radius. Although this too produces a hygienic "bubble", unless your bed is built for fairies and is smack-dab in the middle of that sphere you'll still be breathing in allergens. Compounding the issue is that the unit will register the air as being of sufficient quality to preclude ramping up the fan speed, thereby perpetuating the smaller effective radius.
As such, I would recommend not keeping the unit running during the day if the room is unoccupied, and keeping it turned off Auto mode. Instead, turn it on an hour or so before bed, and keep it on the "High" setting. When you do this it will initially register the air quality as being poor (even if it was running on Auto all day) but will have cleaned the room by the time your head hits the pillow.
this seems to be a continuous issue with this product if purchased on warehouse deals so buyers be aware.
is the price worth the quality?? yes it is. but as long as you get a clean new piece without missing parts.
As others have noted, the sensor is very sensitive - it'll go orange for pretty much anything nearby: even water vapour from a shower, toaster burning your toast, and anything else smelly. Five minutes on high and it'll go blue again. Red however seems to be reserved for more serious air quality issues, had that once and it took about half an hour with windows closed to bring it down to blue for the whole apartment.
Like the sleep mode very much since the noise is low and the lights turn off except for a small indicator light. It does seem to detect any change to the condition since I notice speeding up a bit after I use a spray or similar in the room.
I was replacing my Germguardian AC4825 and the only thing I find weird is that the germguardian did leave a noticeably different freshness after a few hours of running in a small room, but the WINIX does not; although I find much more dust captured on the filter. I also was breathing better at night with the germguardian, but the winix doesn't seem to have improved much on that side either. Its good at removing odors after cooking though.
Happy so far.
I would definitely recommend this product.
Winix has a great automatic feature that detects the air quality within the room and adjusts it's speed accordingly. I've tested this and it works really well, the LED goes from Blue (clean), Yellow, and Red.
This unit comes with a cool remote controller that also has a holder. The holder comes with double-sided tape to either stick on a wall or on the unit itself.
Highly recommended and super fast shipping, especially during the Christmas holidays!
I especially like the auto feature, which means the air purifier only turns on when needed (saving on energy). It’s very quiet which means I sometimes forget it’s even there: the filters are easy to remove and clean. Definitely worth it the cost.
Really helps if you have pets. I hope the filter lasts up to a year as mentioned in the manual.
