Connectivity issues, poor support, subscription-only service 5/13/2020 make it a poor choice

I have used the Wink Hub 2 for a couple years and my experience had been mostly positive. In recent months, there are several issues that have changed my perspective. First, at least 3 times in the last 2 months, the Wink app skill lost connectivity with Alexa. Prior to that, I had experienced issues with the unit not connecting to my home network, requiring deleting then reconnecting the unit to my network. Very time consuming and annoying, given the number of devices/groups I needed to reconnect. The final straw was an email I received today (5/6/2020) stating that Wink would be "transitioning to a $4.99 monthly subscription, starting on May 13, 2020." and "Should you choose not to sign up for a subscription you will no longer be able to access your Wink devices from the app, with voice control or through the API, and your automations will be disabled on May 13."

This is simply unacceptable. Their help links and customer service lines of little to no use correcting the errors I had experienced, problems (particularly with Alexa connectivity) have been more frequent, now they announce a move to a subscription-only service with one week notice?!? No. Done. I can not recommend this product. Paying more for less is ridiculous. My advice: stay away.

After spending over $100 based on no monthly fees, wink is requiring a $4.99 monthly subscription-not honoring original deal. I understand if they want to charge a monthly subscription to new customers who consider the subscription when they decide if the price of the purchase is worth it. If the company was honorable, they would grandfather in the original purchases for the devices they already own, or offer refunds, and have a subscription for the new items. Why would anyone want to buy products from a company that would not honor deals they made with their customers? Wink, do what is honorable and grandfather in items already sold, or offer a rebate for those items. Based on this move, I would not be surprised if wink has a small increase in stock price and then goes out of business. Hopefully someone will take them over who has more honor and understands that behaving honorable is better in the long run.

Must pay monthly Subscription Fee to use

Out of nowhere, Wink (now owned by will.i.am from the Black-eyed Peas) announced that in 7 days they are going to start charging monthly subscriptions and if you don’t register to pay, within the week, your hub will no longer work, rendering all of the devices it controls useless. I purchased this product because it ADVERTISED that there were no monthly subscription fees.

This was announced in the days of Coronavirus and Shelter in Place orders, where a lot of folks had lost their jobs. They really picked an amazing time to go in this direction. I would surmise that the company could care less for the customers who already purchased the hub because they won’t be adding future revenue unless they subscribe.

In addition to the complete disregard for their customer base, the quality of the integration and connectivity is horrible. It goes down several times a month and takes almost a day to fix, each time.

I've Tried Them All, Wink was the Best

After making the investment in Wink, the company is extorting users with 1 week notice that the system is going to be a brick unless you pay $5.00 a month for the privilege to use the device that you already paid for. They are going to cut of ALL functionality, including local automations, should be called Hoodwinked.

I've tried just about every home automation hub out there, Smart Thing 1 & 2, Vera Lite & Pro, Staples Connect, Iris, some USB gizmo, all promise to manage your smart home devices, but none has reliably, until I found Wink Hub 2.

It works with a wide variety of devices and supports many protocols. Most importantly it just works, it does what it promises to do, reliably.I have about 20 smart devices working with Wink,and the automation has been flawless. I plug a device in, pair it with Wink and it works. It plays nicely with Amazon's Alexa enabled stuff perfectly.

Do not buy any Wink products!

I bought this device because there was no additional cost of ownership, ie subscription fees. Today I just got an email that it will now be $5 per month to continue using my device and that it will soon be disabled if I do not pay up.

"Should you choose not to sign up for a subscription you will no longer be able to access your Wink devices from the app, with voice control or through the API, and your automations will be disabled on May 13. Your device connections, settings and automations can be reactivated if you decide to subscribe at a later date."

I know there are costs in running the servers and such, however, it is unscrupulous to change the terms after someone has spent hundreds of dollars in a platform. They should be required to pay me back for my new paper weight since the life I got out of this product was much shorter than it should have been.

Shame on you Wink.

Well I bought this hub a couple years ago because there was not a monthly fee, well guess what? THEY ARE NOW CHARGING A MONTHLY FEE AND IF YOU DO NOT PAY ALL OF YOUR DEVICES WILL BE DISCONNECTED AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE HOME AUTOMATION. THIS IS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DISRESPECTFUL!! HEADING TO SAMSUNG SMART THINGS AS WE SPEAK. BYE BYE WINK SHOULD HAVE CREATED A BETTER BUSINESS PLAN AND NOT PISSED OFF EVERYONE WHO THOUGHT YOU WERE REPUTABLE!!!

It controls 27 of my lights switches on zwave and garage door and front door. Most of the time there is no delay, after 1-2 months of use. Only once or twice it was slow to respond, but most other time is 1-2 sec or less. The app when adding switches may not say it finished but it still successfully added the light. It was confusing but when I called support they were helpful. Have not tried SmartThings for comparison but so far I like the stability despite a few hiccups. Only think that I wish is a physical button accessory or wall mountable switch for scene control. SmartThings seems to Have a few switches that supports it at relatively low cost.

Update from wink 1 to wink 2 fails. Called tech support and they said it's a known bug that all customers have and that it has an unknown ETA to fix. Recommended I manually unpair about 68 devices then repair them, which would have taken about 40 hours or so, no thanks.
