Editorial Reviews

Largely inspired by Prince Buster, who sold thousands of rude records, often under the counter in the underground reggae world, Judge Dread took the genre to new levels (high or low, depending on your viewpoint) throughout the seventies. Originally a doorman and bouncer, Judge Dread (born Alex Hughes) had seen at first hand how the ska and reggae crowds had taken to such hits as Big Five, Prince Buster s rude parody of Brook Benton s 'Rainy Night In Georgia', and adopting the name Judge Dread (after a character created by Prince Buster) recorded a similar piece of naughtiness entitled 'Big Six'. Word of mouth propelled the single up the charts to just outside the top ten, even though every radio station in the country had imposed a ban. Indeed, not one of Judge Dread s eleven hits enjoyed so much as a single play on mainstream radio, but with two top ten hits and nine top forty chart entries, who was Judge Dread to complain. This album contains re-recordings of his best known songs, including 'Big Six', the one that started it all, and his interpretations of 'Je T aime (Moi Non Plus)' (even more risqué than the original!) and 'Y Viva España', re-titled 'Y Viva Suspenders' in Judge Dread s version. It is, in effect, Judge Dread s greatest hits, from a performer who was second only to Bob Marley in putting reggae music onto the British charts during the 1970s and whose music was once described as being as subtle as a smack in the ear with a housebrick . That did not stop him having hits in the homeland of reggae: Jamaica, who took to his infectious and amusing brand of ska.
