“Rutkoski delivers the conclusion to this trilogy with aplomb and grace . . . The heart of this story, however, has always been Arin and Kestrel’s complicated love for each other, and here their once-sizzling chemistry is replaced with real affection and attempts to truly know each another, though fans can rest assured there are still plenty of passionate encounters in this satisfying conclusion.” ―The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

Even in the thick of war, tricks, and deceit; we were never left wanting when it came to Arin and Kestrel. After spending most of book two apart, they're reunited early on in The Winner's Kiss. Although, things aren't quite as what we expect between them. It's a delicious slow burn for Arin and Kestrel that messed with my poor feels for far too long but it made the climax all the more sweeter. These two are everything to me.
As much as I hated seeing Kestrel broken down so low, it was entirely worth it to see her rise even stronger than before. I loved seeing more of her brilliant scheming mind. Arin is the definition of SWOON. He definitely wears his heart on his sleeve and I love him all the more for it. I've never seen someone so determined to do whatever it takes for his country's freedom.
As always, Marie Rutkoski blows me away with her superb writing. You can tell she really did her battle research with this book. There was so much thought and strategy put into each battle scene and it was all so descriptive that I could imagine myself fighting alongside Arin and Kestrel. Marie definitely knows how to grab your attention and keep it.
Overall, The Winner's Kiss was a stunning conclusion! The story was wrapped up so nicely. Not just for Arin and Kestrel, but other side characters we have grown to love. I would have loved to have seen an epilogue because I'm always wanting more but it wasn't completely necessary. I'm only sad it's over!
From the first sentence to the last, Rutkoski takes you on a sweeping journey of believable happenings with our hero and heroine. I would read them again and again just to enter into Kestrel and Arin's rich world of vibrant color and feeling.
Oh my heart! If there is one thing that Marie Rutkoski is brilliant at, is that she knows how to write emotion. I cried by chapter 11. No joke, I literally cried. I can’t think of a book that has affected me the way these three books have. I’ve never been so involved, so moved, so tense it was amazing. I can’t wait for more books my this author!
If you haven’t had a chance to read this trilogy there isn’t much I can say without spoiling it for you. Just know that I was very pleased with how the author ended this trilogy. It was whoa interesting to watch the character development between Kestrel and Arin. I got frustrated at times with Kestrel but there was no reason for me to be frustrated given the circumstances. I loved how Kestrel from the beginning of this trilogy was strong she just didn’t know how strong she was as a person. Arin was all anger and hatred in the beginning but by the end he was different. His fight for his people became slightly different, less angry. I just loved it.
The romance is one of the best things about this trilogy. It’s soooo swoon worthy and heart wrenching at the same time.
I really enjoyed getting to know some new characters, I just fell in love with Roshar and his personality and his interactions with Kestrel and Arin. He was just, the best.
Overall I was beyond pleased with how Rutkoski ended it and I thinks she is a brilliant writer.
Sexual Content: mild/moderate (knowledge that 2 characters have sex)
Violence: moderate (fighting scenes, torture scenes nothing too graphic)
