This is the game (I won't say toy) for people of all ages who want to have some mental fun and keep their brains active. I taught my son when he was a young boy as well as my 7-year-old nephew years later. Once you learn the simple rules, it's yours forever. It's a flexible (and portable) board with shiny "stones" used as game pieces, and your mission is to either capture five pairs of your opponents' pieces or get five of your own in a row along the grid. Sounds simple? Yes, like most good games, but it is stimulating as well. When my nephew turned 8, I purchased this game and he was thrilled; we'll keep the paper board he made with the crayon-marked grid at my house. Why not use my own game? My grown son claimed it years ago. It's hard to give up!

So disappointed! This is one of our family's favorite traditional games, and I had ordered this for a Christmas present for our grandchildren. Imagine my dismay when I opened it to find yet another Made In China piece of junk instead of the high quality game of Pente. There were not glass stones as has been traditional and as described in the seller's product description. I could overlook that it no longer comes in the cardboard tube, but I could not overlook the outgassing odor of cheap materials, and the cheap, painted small wooden discs stuffed into ziploc baggies.

Sending it back and will buy elsewhere.

I enjoy playing Pente on this mat, but it's got some room for improvement. The mat itself is of good quality and can't be faulted. The glass stones aren't as great -- two of the colors, black and amber, are so similar that we can't use them at the same time. Blue and green are fine. The packaging is less than ideal: the stones came in bags that were essentially disposable that we had to replace with Ziploc bags. In my opinion a game should come with a decent way (like a cloth bag) to put away the pieces. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Also, I have seen Pente sets that come in a heavy duty cardboard tube, so you won't have to worry about the packaging falling apart over time. Not this set -- it comes in a standard cardboard box that we have to treat with care so we don't mess it up. I suppose most board games are like that, but I had higher expectations. Again, I like the mat, which makes it enjoyable to play, but I would probably shop for a more expensive set next time and be willing to pay for those little details that are missing from this set.

Let me first say that I have ordered many things from Amazon..barely a week goes by where I haven't ordered something. This is the first time I have felt the need to write a review. That said.....this product came with wooden pieces...not stones as claimed....exceptionally annoying. Not worth the money.

This is a very fun game that I enjoyed from the 70's. It is the perfect game, simple rules, great learning curve, however the more you play the more intense the game becomes. It's kind of addicting. The product I received is very nice with just 3 minor complaints. Since I have played a lot, my games tend to get a little longer and we begin to run out of stones (playing pieces), the second item (kinda petty) is that the original game came in a hard cardboard tube, perfect for travel. This one is a flimsy box. Third is that the original stones had those cloth bags for the stones. This one has those little plastic zip-lock ones, which are good for a while but begin to tear. Overall I am very satisfied with the product.

I probably didn't read the description closely enough but the pieces are cheap wood pieces not the beautiful stone ones in an older set that my son had. Because they aren't the see-through glass ones, it is hard to set them on the intersections as they are too big (although any smaller and they would be a pain to move). Disappointed. I might try to pick up some of the stones somewhere else.

While what I received is ok - the mat is a nice quality, the game is playable, etc., it is not what is pictured. What was pictured/described was a game containing glass pente stones (like in older versions of the game). What I got was cheap, wooden painted discs. Not at all what I wanted, but it doesn't really affect the playability of the game, just the asthetics of it.

I did read some of the reviews, and there were others complaining of this same thing, but then other reviews said that they received a game with glass stones, so it must have been recently changed. Thus, Amazon (or the seller) needs to update the photo/description.

As it was, it's not really worth sending back since I only paid twenty dollars, but still, it isn't what I wanted.
