I figured Rubik's Cube out on my own, many years ago (not from a book), and when I bought the order 4 cube I found there was much that carried over from the order 3, but there were new problems to be solved too. Proceeding then to the order 5 (Professor) cube, it seems to me there's nothing really new if you have a good understanding of how to attack the order 3 and 4 cubes. There are more cubies to deal with, but nothing fundamentally different. I unscrambled mine the first time in under an hour -- and that's with treating the puzzle gently, and my own lack of speed generally, and a few times I made mistakes and messed up some of the progress I've made. So, if you're looking for a new level of intellectual challenge, this isn't it. And, obviously, it's not for you if you're obsessed with speed.
On the other hand, if you just like unscrambling the lower order cubes just for the mental calisthenics of it, this is a good puzzle. And obviously if you're into pretty patterns, or if you're simply a cube completist, you'll want an order 5.
Just treat it gently, and I think you'll be happy.
I didn't read the reviews before I purchased this 5x5, although it would not have mattered because it's rated 4 stars...good enough for me. Oh Not So! The cube feels and sounds like I took it to the beach and filled all the spaces with sand. It is impossible to move a layer one one-quarter turn without a lot of concentrated force. I have to treat every turn as if I'm opening up a brand new jar of jelly. The good thing about that is that the center pieces keep trying to pop out so because I'm going so slowly I can stop the rotation in time to push the piece back in. I quickly figured out without youtube how to solve the centers, but I'll need help on the edges. I'll also need cold packs for the wrist pain.
Having tired from trying to turn the layers, after 15 min I quit. Strain on my wrist is worrisome. I hope I can take it apart to lube it but I will be even more disappointed if the colored labels start falling off like many of the reviews mention. I'm sure I will enjoy the process of solving the 5x5 but I don't think using a timer will have much value. I'll definitely be looking for a different brand cube.
I bought two at the same time but one is still sitting unwapped in its box.
I got this like a year ago but decided that I was going to finally become someone who reviews the products he buys- because I rely on reviews in order to choose WHAT to buy.
The product got to me in a week and a half-ish. I'm not sure if it was because I didn't have Amazon Prime then or if it was because it was from a different seller... but when it came it was in a sealed box and everything looked/worked great!
If you love puzzles, and you're not prone to throwing something through the television screen when you get frustrated with it, then give this a shot.
The pros: good action, instructions included.
The cons: everything was in Chinese, and there were no logos or other indications that it is an official Rubik's Cube brand. Definately a knockoff, which I wouldn't mind... But it's not what was advertised.
From the other reviews, it sounds like it's hot and miss to get an authentic cube... Buyer beware.
