Winsor & Newton Cotman Brushes
Cotman brushes are a range of pure synthetic water colour brushes of the highest quality that have been created using the same skills, generated over many years, as those used in making the finest sable brushes.
For over 150 years our brush makers have applied their knowledge to produce brushes of the highest standard. As new materials have become available we have used our experience to produce new ranges of brushes, each with their own benefits. Cotman brushes were the first complete range of synthetic brushes to be developed by Winsor & Newton.

SpringThe thicker fibres contribute to the strength and spring of the brush, the fibres are soft enough to work with but have a good snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. |
Colour carrying capacityThe re-developed blend of special synthetic fibres gives the brushes greater ability to make larger washes or longer lines, without the need to recharge the brush with colour. The colour capacity of the brushes has been increased by up to 50%. |
FerrulesThe ferrule (which holds the hair to the handle) is made from high quality nickel-plated brass, which helps to prevent corrosion, clogging of hair and enables easy cleaning. |
A wide variety of shapes
This popular range has different shapes for a variety of alternative applications. They include synthetic mops for large washes, angled brushes for detail, filberts for softer edges, riggers for longer extended fine lines and short-handled fans for delicate blending. The round brushes in Series 111 are designed to provide a finer point for finer lines with greater control.

Great for varnishing. I had bought a cheap 3 pack of brushes for $8 and the bristles separated and left big streaks of varnish in my painting; seen in the last picture. So I decided to spend a little more and this brush saved the day as seen in the first pic. The second and third picture shows after I cleaned it and it cleaned up great leaving the bristles nice and soft again. It was a little more than what I wanted to spend on a brush but when it comes to your art, don’t go cheap on art materials.

I bought this brush primarily as a liner to my art. It’s still not fine enough for what I want it to do but can do decent lines. The tip does tend to fray but wetting it can reset it back to a fine tip-still some skills are needed to be able to do fine lines with this brush. Quality is good.
