Winsor & Newton Professional Water Colour
Since 1832 when Henry Newton and William Winsor introduced the first moist water colours to the world, much of our reputation for supreme quality has stemmed from the Professional Water Colour range.
Since then Professional Water Colour continues to be formulated and manufactured according to our founding principles; to create an unparalleled water colour range which offers artists the widest and most balanced choice of pigments with the greatest possible permanence.
Each colour within this wide and balanced spectrum of colours, has been selected and formulated to offer the greatest choice so that artists can use a unique palette that best suits their work.
This lightweight tube box contains twelve 5ml tubes of Professional Water Colour includes: Winsor Lemon Yellow, Winsor Yellow, Scarlett Lake, Alizarine Cramoisie Permanent, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Blue (Green Umber), Viridian, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Lamp Black. Actual contents may vary.
We use single pigments wherever possible. Single pigment formulations are purer in hue and cleaner in colour than mixtures of pigments, providing a larger number of colour mixes before resulting in muddy effects. Within the new Professional Water Colour range there are 75 single pigments amounting to 78% of the range.
Our Professional Water Colour exhibit unrivaled transparency due to the unique pigment dispersion in the manufacture of the colour. This is particularly important because transparency is the key characteristic of water colour. As a result of the thinness of the water colour film, all colours have a transparent quality on paper, allowing the reflective white of the paper to shine through. However, pigments do retain their natural characteristics to some degree. For example, transparent pigments refract light in much the same manner as stained glass, making jewel-like brilliance and clean mixing. Opaque colours such as cadmiums are likely to cover significantly more than transparent colours.
93 out of 96 colours in the Professional Water Colour range are classed as 'permanent for artists' use'. This means that 97% of our Professional Water Colour are rated AA or A for permanence to ensure that the colours used today will appear the same for generations to come.

It's such a perfect watercolor set. The included waterbottle, with the amount I use, usually lasts me three paint sessions if I pour the cup out afterwards (Since then I've gotten better at cleaning with the sponge instead of swishing in the water and can reuse the water). The sponge is a great addition, you use it to both clean pigment from brushes and dab the paper to lighten areas and its better than a paper towel in size and cleans without issue. If its full of water, just squeeze it out into the grass or cup if you're indoors.
The pigments are vivid and go a long way with just a little paint. They mix well. The brush is very tiny, so I'd recommend getting a Da Vinci 1523 Russian Red Sable Round size 5 portable brush or something to carry along with it. The included brush is maybe a 2, give or take. It works well but is best used in conjunction with a 5 or 6. I use a 5x8.25 moleskine watercolor album [EDIT: I don't like my moleskine as much as my plain Strathmore 400 series watercolor sketchbook. The paper is super thin in moleskine, good for light washes but not layers at all] and those two brushes work for just about everything, but I use more when I'm at my desk.
If you're new and wondering whether you should spend twice the money of the Cottman colors, get what you can afford but lean towards these ones. I haven't compared them in depth, but the professional quality ones seem to be a better and the pans last a bit longer. Get yourself a good watercolor sketchbook too, and perhaps some sakura pigma micron pens and a gelly roll white pen and you can do anything. Don't be afraid to use up your supplies, you learn a lot from using them often.
Overall this is a perfect set for doing watercolor on the go. I got them so I wouldn't have an excuse not to watercolor wherever I went. I do it in class, too. I'll attach pictures of all of the items. (sorry for bad lighting)
The colors I got: Winsor Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Alizarin Crimson (not permanent), Pyrrol Red, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue (Green shade), Viridian, Permanent Sap Green, Diox Violet, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Chinese White, Ivory Black
It's an ok set up, except the Alizarin Crimson. Permanent Alizarin Crimson as listed should be pigments PR206+PV19. But what they sent was Alizarin Crimson PR83. But PR83 is not light fast and will fade. So I switched it out with some PV19 I already had.
I also think Chinese white wasn't really necessary. Unless you want to mix with other colors to create pastels or make them more opaque. White paper is usually used for the white color in watercolor painting.
Also this viridian is hard to re-wet because that's just how viridian is. So I would have preferred a different green because wetting viridian is like wetting a stone, you can't paint with a wet stone. I also popped that one out and replaced it with a different cool green.
But for the price ($74) I like it. Half pans are $10 each individually if you were trying to build your own split primary pallet.
But, like the product description says, actual contents will vary. One of my earth tones is different. I got a purple color. And both of my yellows were different. But there was still a warm and a cool.
I think W&N should replace black and white but overall a good choice of colors.
The paint brush is tinny, useful just for details.
3 mixing spaces, a bottle of water.
I'll edit my review after I use it more.
I was pleased with most of the colors and can replace the ones I want to change. One can easily order replacement 'half pans' of paint in a huge variety of colors.
