In a 24-and-a-half-chapter advent story, Smith delivers a lively holiday adventure. When a distracted boy named Oliver loses his letter to Santa in the wind and snow, Winston the mouse finds it and sets out to ensure that the letter arrives at its destination: “This letter needed to get to Santa Claus!” Memorable moments from his journey include hitching a ride on the back of Lady Prudence Merryweather-Whiskerton the Third, a cat who prefers to dine on salmon over mouse, and flying into the snowy night on a toy plane. Smith includes instructions for Christmas-themed craft activities between chapters (a pom-pom robin, a paper chain); it’s a clever way to keep readers to one chapter a day. Though the narrative’s tone can be a touch twee, the lengthy, interactive format and Smith’s plucky, at times elegantly expressive art may make this a holiday favorite. We collect new books every year at Christmas to add to our holiday library and had never heard of this one. It came up as a suggestion based on my previous purchases and viewing history. First of all, it is WAY thicker than we were expecting, so better value for the money than I first thought. It’s a really nicely done book, from the beautiful Christmas cover to the nice quality, thick pages (sort of same feeling weight as watercolor painting papers or good quality sketchbook), to the absolutely adorable illustrations throughout! The storyline is absolutely adorable, and the illustrations of the mouse, with his insanely long Christmas scarf and oversized envelope he’s carrying, make it comical as well as cute! All of my kids love this so far, and we all love the daily suggestions of Christmas and advent crafts and activities. Some of them are better than others, and some would really only be interesting to much younger children, but were all enjoying it nonetheless. It’s worth it for the story and illustrations alone...the daily activities are just a nice extra. I will be purchasing these next year, for siblings and friends. SO super cute! I’ve included several photos of pages from the book, as I know from personal experience, that its often hard to gauge what the book will be like just from the cover or description, when I’m not familiar with it...hopefully uploading these will help you to get an idea of what this book is like...
