In the interest of full disclosure, I have known both the subject of this book, and the author of this book, for many years. Having admitted to that, and at the risk of being labeled a shill, this is one terrific volume, cram-packed with photos and conceptual art, and an abundance of text that far surpasses standard coffee-table-book fare.

Stan Winston is one of the top artists working in the field of motion picture makeup and creature effects, and from his studio have emerged iconic characters for the Aliens, Terminator, Predator and Jurassic Park series, as well as countless others. Creatively allied with powerhouse filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Tim Burton, Winston has had the talent and resources to perfect his craft and advance the state of the art. Though much of the Stan Winston story is recounted in his own words, Winston shares the limelight with members of his crew, past and present, whose own recollections and reflections, often humorous, enliven the text. At its core, the book is a lovefest; but Winston and his chronicler do not flinch at giving weight to his personal and professional failures, as well as his successes.

Author Jody Duncan is no stranger to the material. As editor of Cinefex magazine for 15 years, and one of its principal writers, she has a commanding grasp of the subject matter. She has also authored "making of" books for several Stan Winston films. But this book is no rehash. All of the interviews and perspectives are fresh and illuminating.

I own just about every book on makeup and visual effects published in the last 30 years -- several shelves' worth. If I had to pare them down to five essential volumes, "The Winston Effect" would be among them.

Super inspiring book exploring the incredible work of the Stan Winston Studio. I don't think any other effects artist or single studio can claim to have created so many iconic characters. Thumbing through this makes me wish Hollywood studios would revive the use of practical effects and rely less heavily on CGI or at lease strive to strike a better balance between the two.

This is a beautifully published hardback book. The paperstock is gorgeous and meant to last a lifetime. Winston has had his hand in so many of the films that I love that this was a no-brainer purchase, and I'm glad Jody Duncan did a worthy tribute to this legend. Tons of high quality images make this a must have for enthusiasts and budding professionals.

We bought this book for our son, a huge fan of Stan Winston's work, for his 13th birthday. Of all of his presents, he showed the most excitment about this book. It is a HUGE hardbound book (easily 12" x 12" x 1-1/2" thick) with an AWESOME cover! It is full of amazing full color production pictures, stills, and artwork and is a thorough examination of Winston's long and illustrious career in Hollywood. The book is a little pricey at $30+, but it is well worth it when you see the wealth of material presented between its covers. It is by far and away the best "career retrospective" book that I have ever read.

Bought this book for my brother, and of course I had to read it before wrapping. It's pretty much one of the coolest books ever. There's so much information and background stories, and the photos are awesome! Its like a big 'fun fact' book on the behind the scenes of all the our favorite sci-fi movies! He's going to freak when he opens it :)

This is a tribute to the ingenuity of Stan Winston and his studio. Actually, I prefer the mechanical effects, they seemed to ADD something to the movies. Now, it's CGI afer CGI, there's not even a storyline...

This is quite a massive and top quality book. The pictures and imformation are wonderful.
The one gripe I have is that there is not much coverage on some of the studios not so
popular movies, Pumpkin Head & Relic to name a few. These were great creatures and just as good as
the dino's in J.P.
That is only minor though and does not distract from it being a Fantastic book.

Of all the books I own this one satisfies my passion for monster movies as well as my passion for art. Filled with gorgeous high quality photos and in depth insight into each creature and character this book is better than watching it in a movie! The hard work and creative inspiration that goes into each creature of Stan Winston's is truly awe inspiring. It makes me want to work in his studio!
