Editorial Reviews

Review

"Readers will relate to these characters, be moved to tears and laughter by them, and most importantly, be inspired by them . . . a journey you should definitely take." (Kirkus Reviews)

“The parallels to the biblical Joseph are easily recognizable and fit organically with the flow of the contemporary story. Evans has done his homework to realistically portray the ad agency world. The dialogue flows well and the main characters feel honest and likable.” (Deseret News)

I just finished reading Richard Paul Evan's latest holiday creation "A Winter Dream". Although my Hardback book is due to arrive this afternoon, I just couldn't wait and began reading it on my Kindle app. I finished it in 4 hours. It was impossible to put down.

This story is a retelling of the story of Joseph from the book of Genesis in the Bible. Mr. Evans did an amazing job of capturing all the detail and meaning of the original story by weaving it through modern day events.

Your heart will be moved from the first page to the last.

I heartily recommend this book and all of Richard Paul Evans books. You will not be disappointed!!!

I got a special surprise yesterday when my book was delivered a day early. I had it finished in about 5 hours. Like all of RPE's books, it was amazing. I love that it is a modern day telling of a bible story. He did a fantastic job on this book. Richard definitely has a way with words and I just love all of the "diary" quotes in all of his books. This book is uplifting and inspiring. Read it, it won't disappoint. :)

This story is amazing! I read it in three hours. It follows the storyline of Joseph from the bible. Once again, Richard Paul Evans shines with his ability to write stories that warm the heart and soul.

A Winter Dream: A Novel by Richard Paul Evans is a BRILLIANT work of art! Once I began reading today, I could not put the book down. Finishing the book minutes ago, I am currently overwhelmed with all kinds of emotions. To say it is well-written and easy to read is an understatement! The message in this novel is as pertinent to our society as it was in Bible days. I would label this novel a classic for all time. This may well be Richard's greatest novel - yes, even above The Christmas Box. This modern version of the Bible story of Joseph and the coat of many colors correlates very closely to the Bible account. Richard took risks in making the story so close to the actual account, but his risks paid off. It took nothing away from the Bible account. My best description is BRILLIANT! I recommend A Winter Dream to young people, churches, families, and schools! What a tool for teaching character! Thank you for another excellent book, Richard.

Great read! I could not put this book down as well as all Richard Paul Evan's books. It keeps you interested. I of course fell in love with the character. I'll keep her name to myself until you read it. The sad part is, I finished the book in less than a day. I'm out of reading material. Again.

Richard Paul Evans is one of my favorite authors and I turn to his books for a good feel read. This book had a lot of potential given it aligned with the biblical story of Joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers. But this Joseph, Joseph Jacobson, was disappointingly passive. He was quick to accept the extortion from his brothers without a fight or question or depth of feeling. Yes, he did it so that his younger brother, Ben, would not face potential jail time but going along with it actually was a selfish move. How about his parents? His girlfriend he was planning to propose to? The condition was to drop everything and move to another state immediately without any notice. So okay, that was unbelievable but I continue to read and see what happens. Of course, all the ducks came in a row. He meets another woman (who by the way had an outrageous background; my favorite character in this book), had the winning advertising pitch, and comes in full circle in a powerful position. It all came too easy. The conflicts were there but he really didn't do much to get there. I felt that Mr. Evans might have thought that the analogy would speak for itself. Yes, the reunion with his dad did make me cry but for the shear fact that generally a reunion between a parent and child would be moving.

One might say, well Joseph did a good deed and so karma would have it that things work well for him. Fantastic! But that's not the problem in this book. It was the lack of depth in Joseph's character. For instance, what happened to the grieving process? Holy smokes, all his brothers (I'm counting Ben since he let it happen) banished him, where was the passion for any feelings about that?

I still love Mr. Evans and will continue to read his books. This one just didn't rank with the zeal in the story that I've come to expect from his books

What can I say...Richard Paul Evans is the father of saccharine. While it's not my favorite type book, it certainly held my interest! The writer has great plot lines, but his view of the world seems limited to simplistic black/white scenarios. I did enjoy the way he made his character see the brighter side of things even when most would be severely depressed..but the almost unbelievable way the family reacts with contrition is right out of fairyland. People who could do what this family did, would not then turn around and show guilt and remorse so easily. So although not a believable story, he always spins a feel-good ending. What can I say...I like the guy and his stories!

This is the story of dreams, of a man named Joseph, favored son of a man named Israel, and a very special coat. Sound familiar? Of course it does ... it's from Genesis chapters 37-50. It is also from Richard Paul Evans' long-awaited holiday offering, A Winter Dream. As he did with Lost December last year, Evans gives us a modernized story based on a beloved bible story and does it beautifully. In A Winter Dream, the main character is Joseph Jacobson (Jacob being another name for Israel) and he is one of eleven sons, the most favored. The family owns a successful advertising agency in Colorado headed by its' patriarch, Joseph's father Israel. The elder brothers are a jealous and envious lot and are plotting a way to rid themselves of Joseph, particularly as their father has once again shown his favoritism in giving Joseph his beloved Navy flight jacket decorated with many badges of honor from his years in the Vietnam War. Joseph has dreams, prophetic dreams that come true, though he may not fully understand the meaning at first. His brothers do manage to banish Joseph to an advertising agency in Chicago where ... well, I really don't want this review to be a spoiler so I will stop my plot synopsis here.

The story is relatively short, 288 pages, but a fulfilling read nonetheless, as are all the books I have read by RPE. It is an inspiring way to start the holiday season. Richard Paul Evans' books are popular for three reasons: they are interesting, they are fun, and they remind us what is truly of value in this life without being "preachy". I zipped through this book in two nights (it would have been one night, had that not been election night) and ended with a smile on my face.
